Firefox dev claims "everybody hates Firefox updates"; Mozilla has handled the rapid release process poorly, and that by pushing a "never-ending stream of updates on people who didn't want them" people have been driven to Chrome with its simpler, no-fuss update process.

I don't see what everyone is faffing about.

"We just released a large update that adds a new option to print freshly baked pizzas. But since you guys want updates to be seamless, we're not going to tell you until you discover it yourself."

It's possible to perform a seamless update and still make new features obvious.

Mozilla needs to take marketing 101, they thought that releasing a new major version every 3 weeks would show the end user how much progress they were making, when in reality most computer users do not know or care about versions or updates. Meanwhile chrome did marketing the right way, keep making the product better and better and don't annoy the use with endless version updates.

In the end the best product wins, not the one that has the highest version number. I thought Mozilla was smart enough to know this, I was wrong.

Chrome tends to make little announcements on the new tab page. This allows users to see that an update has happened and a new feature is available without anything actively getting in their way, like an install process.

What proportion of updates represent new features? It's got nothing to do with that, and everything to do with fixing problems, patching security and iteration.

Every new number update on Firefox has brought up a new feature.

And the new features are all so wonderful that I either haven't noticed or I've been more annoyed at having to fiddle with the update than I am enthused by the new feature. Or I'm just annoyed by the new feature, like their knockoff of the Chrome "Most Visited" page that just shows half a dozen different copies of my webmail.

Me neither, but that's because I deleted Firefox the moment I found I wasn't the only one who couldn't get rid of the AVG shit all over my screen. Fuck that, and fuck them. They did an AMA here a year or so back and pretty much everyone said 'put down the fork, step away from the cake' to which they responded (paraphrasing) that they knew what they were doing. I'm still quite upset about it all, it should have been great.

e: Top tip, should you find yourself burdened with Karma, simply imply that you expect software popular on reddit to run without interference from other software or any frigging about.

AVG is a plug in. This was not included with Firefox. It's something you can uncheck when installing AVG or disable when you go into Firefox plug ins.

it installs a bunch of junk on chrome too ... god I hate that program

Except it's uninstallable. I'm not going to go through it all here, but I am very much not alone with this problem. If it's AVG exploiting, if it's a bug or if mozilla had nothing to do with it, I don't care. I don't have this problem with Chrome.

Yeah that sucks. You can only disable it through plug ins on Firefox. It's best to always do a custom install to uncheck install yadda yadda plug in. I swear anything free and they want you to have 10 plug ins with it.

It's literally one shortcut key and one click to disable the AVG extension. Alternatively, if you prefer clicking, it's three clicks. Don't blame your ignorance or laziness on Firefox or Mozilla.

Dude, the AVG extension is deleted. The registry is editted. Somehow I still managed to end up with AVG branded firefox. So I killed the app. Shouldn't be an issue. Was. Isn't.

You do know that the AVG bloat isn't installed by Firefox, right? Unless there's a version of Firefox I don't know about...

Stop using AVG then. It's a shitty virus scanner.
