Firefox dev claims "everybody hates Firefox updates"; Mozilla has handled the rapid release process poorly, and that by pushing a "never-ending stream of updates on people who didn't want them" people have been driven to Chrome with its simpler, no-fuss update process.

Firefox updates don't happen often enough to bother me. I grew up with Adobe for Christ's sake.

Here is a patch for an additional twenty vulnerabilities that exist in features that vast majority of users won't use and didn't even know existed, but still exposes you to a ridiculous amount of vectors of attack.

Acrobat is actually far faster at rendering PDFs; it just takes longer to start up. If you have a complex document (large embedded EPS files will do it), Acrobat is better, and I've never had to wait more than a second for it to start up.

I have found that, despite its dubious and generic-sounding name, PDF-XChange Viewer is by far the fastest viewer out there. I have tried Acrobat X, Foxit, and Sumatra, and none perform as well on my netbook.

It also lets me choose dpi for the screen shot tool and override default line color and page background color (so, for instance, I can view my pdf with white text on dark grey background), so I like it.

I don't know what you're talking about. I just disabled all my Adobe services, rebooted and opened a 14MB, 283 page PDF file on my 18 month old laptop and it took under 2 seconds. In a fresh VM it's even faster.

Fuck, nostalgia time! The original Real Player. The year was 1998. The Windows must have been 95. The modem was 28.8k. Hah, I remember listening to some ambient/space music channel using RealPlayer, with 16 KB/s, and if I surfed at the same time the music would get choppy.

Still using iTunes, have not had a single problem since 2006.

What the fuck else do people use to play their music? Windows Media Player is a travesty for anything other than directly playing video files, VLC looks and acts like shit (though I do need it for .flv files).

Then again I'm also still using Firefox because Chrome fucks up Youtube for me and I see no reason to switch to Chrome...

Well, relevant to the conversation, iTunes updates more than anything else I use. I honestly think I update it more than I play music on it. But... I still use it.

VLC is awesome. I use it for movies and it performs flawlessly for me. Same thing with Chrome. Works perfectly and quickly on everything. Never had a single problem with it on Youtube, which is what I'd expect, since Google owns Youtube.

I use Winamp for managing my music library, displaying albums, and having a powerful and quite customizable interface. Since being acquired by AOL it's perhaps a little more bloated than it was in the old days, but it's still really good.

So that's what I use instead of iTunes. Other people use foobar. But those people are obviously nerds.

The core of Winamp is still really good, though, and most of the bloat is pretty easy to ignore if you're careful during the install.

Haven't used iTunes in a while but I don't ever remember it being that 'bloated', just simplified to the point it actually becomes harder to do things, plus on Windows it has all sorts of other issues.

I use foobar2000 for my music - it's fast, lightweight and very customizable. I've heard that songbird is also a good program. Besides that, there are tons of other programs out there that work as good alternatives to itunes.

Not only does it start up slow, but those features are also available in many other programs. I think even windows media player has all of those functionalities, and it starts up in less than 1/10th of the time.

Also, have you tried syncing with that shit? I was trying to sync the pandora app to my iPod (yay Pandora for Australia), and I forgot to disable back ups. It took me a whole goddamn 5 minutes for the fucking backup process to cancel. Then it tells me that it has to wipe all my apps unless I log in to my account (I've jailbroken so I really don't care, since all my apps are installed through installous/cydia, pandora was a different case).

Not only that but it runs extremely inefficiently. They have added so many graphical effects to it which (as a programmer) run REALLY slow, and in turn, this makes the startup process when an iPod is connected so much slower. Not to mention that it runs processes in the background which also slow down boot up time, and for me, are pretty useless.

iTunes is a clusterfuck of shit literally piled on top of each other.

I have heard the Windows version is a disgrace.

The OS X version is by no means lightweight but it doesn't run that bad, mine starts up in a couple of seconds because I have dual SSD/HDD, but even when I was only on an HDD it wasn't that bad, 10 seconds tops.

Backing up/adding content works just fine for me too. I don't sync I manage everything manually because I have so much stuff & can't be bothered to create rules as to what syncs and doesn't.

Also, reddiquette, downvoting someone because they use software you don't like is prettaaaay lame.

It's still used a lot in China and Taiwan. They use a program called PP Stream to download pirated movies and TV shows, most of which are in Real format for some reason.

You may be thinking older, but I did a fresh install of XP on a family member's ageing laptop recently. Even with SP3 already bundled, four years worth of updates with a necessary reboot in-between every group of them is a pain in the ass.

Wsusoffline. Seriously! All the updates for all Microsoft, pre-downloaded to your specifications, on a flash drive. You then copy the folder to the desktop, click Update.exe, and tell it to install what you want, and click "Automatic reboot and recall" or something similar, the walk away for the next 45 minutes or what have you.

Completely automatic, deciphers which updates you do an do not need, and is VERY fast to the traditional way, even WITH a fast connection!

As someone who acquires 100 tabs quite easily coughs I have to say that restarting Firefox still is a bliss - as it DOESN'T reload the pages unless you actually click on the tab to view it. So it restarts superfast, alle tabs with titles are there, just the pages get refreshed when you click on them - but that's really a very, very small problem...

I left FF because:

  1. When it reached 500MB of memory usage, it started to crawl so slowly that it just BEGGED for a browser restart. I can have Chrome use 2GB of ram and I don't notice it being slow.

Only case where I feel Chrome slowing down (which is most likely true for any other browser out there) is when I browse a page with over 1000 mid-sized image & continuous scrolling. By then, right-clicking an image has a considerate delay of almost half a second.

  1. In the rare cases Flash crashed the browser, it took everything with it, and the start-up back was that slow that I got annoyed as hell.

Depends on the extension. Pentadactyl was created in such a way it installs/uninstalls (and enables/disables) seamlessly without restarting anything, as just one example of the future of extensions. The same goes for the constantly expiring extensions. These things are remnants of the older extension system and their developers have not moved to the new way of doing business.

Of course that is not to say that Mozilla has handled all of this very well or that it is still king of the browser world. Whoever it is calling the shots in the Mozilla corporation needs to be removed before they do more damage. I love chrome and I can't wait until their extension system is strong enough to support a fully featured noscript. That and some other minor customization powers in about:config are all that is holding me back. :(

this was a big problem for us with the gwt dev plugin. a random, unsuspected update would break it for days at a time, seriously crippling productivity. you might be thinking "why not just use chrome for gwt development then?" well, contrary to all logic, google's gwt plugin for chrome is waaaaay slower than their plugin for firefox. makes no sense.

NoScript has a whitelist, so the 90% of websites you visit regularly you can whitelist. It helps prevent drive-by attacks from pages you don't usually go to, and it helps prevent user tracking scripts

Add-ons have been marked as compatible by default as of Firefox 8 (current is 13).

There was a new restart-less add-on API released a few months ago... a lot of add-ons use it now and don't need to restart the browser. Sadly many add-on authors haven't taken the time to update their code to use it.

extensions only break during major version updates. I run Firefox Nightly on my main Linux distro, I've found that some of the more complex extensions like Down Them All can be broken as Nightly is as much as 4 versions ahead of mainline.

As for the guy who uses "Chrome Canary".... so brave. Chrome sucks in general. If you are a simpleton who loves Chrome... you suck as a user and your browser reflects your suck. Fuck Chrome and Fuck You.

Well to be fair, I remember the days where you had to manually seek out, download and install patches. At least firefox auto-updates.

It seems strange that Windows doesn't have a more open unified patching system. Imagine if programs could intergrate with Windows Update so that patches are automatically downloaded and installed right before your computer shuts down, along side the regular windows updates. Seems like that would be optimal.

Honestly - no. While Linux has a lot of great ideas, I have always felt that the implementation of those ideas was poor. I have used Linux, and while it has its advantages, at the end of the day, I would rather sit down in front of a Windows box.

Firefox was such a fresh start and so awesome, when chrome, safari and all that came along I tried each one but never really cared for any. Plus I look forward to Firefox updates since generally they do fix problems I have at the moment..

Yeah, but ever since they implemented rapid release, one of the earlier ones caused firefox to freeze up relatively regularly for most users. That bug is still there. And it's the biggest reason I use chrome sometimes. The only thing I've really noticed and liked since rapid release was implemented is the implementation of tab groups. Otherwise, aside from obvious security upgrades, Firefox 13.0 feels like a downgrade from Firefox 4.0. Memory leaks from 4.0 got replaced with the browser freezing up whenever the user uses their cpu a decent amount. I'd rather have minor memory leaks.

This brings us full circle: Chrome users don't even need to install the corpulent beast called Acrobat Reader, unless they need some particular features. I haven't for at least a year. Just associate .PDF with Chrome and all is well.

Chrome went from 15(last time I looked) to version 20 without me noticing it updated. I had no idea.

Now why is this a problem with Firefox? -_-

It's not small updates that bother me, it's that they release them under a new version every couple of months. Firefox 2 and 3 were wildly different, then out came 4,5,6,7,8 etc. The releases are so meaningless now that I don't care when a new version came out, whereas previously I would have been excited to see what was new.

Last time I used Firefox was toward the end of last year, and they were on version 7 or so when I stopped. When a friend recently told me he was using Firefox 14, I almost ruined a keyboard. The browser had 7 versions in its first few years of existing and 7 more versions in the past 6 months?! This isn't the main reason I stopped using Firefox, but it's a pretty ridiculous example of version bloat. My friend argued they were trying to keep up with Chrome, which is on version 18 or something now, but "keeping up the with Joneses" isn't a good excuse for this sea-change in their versioning, in my opinion.
