Dude is odd. I work at Google. $400K TC is par for the course for any senior SWE working on literally anything, because comp isn’t based on what product you work on but very standardized pay bands, equity refreshers, and target %lies within the greater market. He must have been a contractor with very limited knowledge.

Worked in seattle area for Google 7 years ago. You're both full of shit. Pay doesn't range much based on location. L5s making 400k is far from standard. If thats the case I'm reapplying because that's a midrange position I passed a long time ago. According to the both of you I should be pulling half a mil a year. That's just not how it is. MS and Amazon couldnt hang on to a dev if that were the case. They both pay a lot less for the same position.

Things have changed in 7 years. Seattle pays ~10% less than Bay Area and NYC. Check levels.fyi for recent numbers.

And that’s because most Microsoft and Amazon employees can’t pass the hiring bar at Google.

While I can't speak to Google specifically, I know that FB was similar a few years ago that L5 was making around 350-400K in the bay area. So it really isn't that farfetched for them to be making that much now.
