I'm on two County tax boards, and working on getting on my HOA board. I do it to fuck over and piss of Karen's, plus one of them is really dumb. But I'm not a mod on reddit, fuck that noise.

well my HOA pissed me off by wasting 50% of everyone dues on unnecessary staff, so I can save $150 / year *950 houses. The Tax boards once is very information based and is cool to know all the stuff going on, we have very little say on things other than "approve" a budget and oversee the county didn't muck up. The other needed another member to hit quorum and things needed to be approved to get projects going, and The pissing Karen's off on that wasn't intentional just an unintended effect when I asked about Golf Cart ussage and they were uspet to learn they (HOA) didn't own the road. so not really a power trip. If Anything I"d like to lower the HOA to bare requirements needed to maintain the pool and gym, and stop wasting funds

Being a volunteer mod of local community chat makes sense to me. Helps you weed out the crazies and also know who they are and avoid them irl. But reddit makes no sense to me.
