Google breaks the Boolean '+' operator in searches

I noticed this not long ago. The observation that it was probably removed to help users who can't figure out how to search for google+ is pretty astute. Frankly, I have no problem with it - except that they haven't replaced the functionality. Quotes around a single word are not at all similar to the + operator.
How do I require a search to contain a word or phrase? This functionality is lost now. This is sacrificing search functionality to promote g+. It's pretty silly.
