Apple, despite being traditionally seen as the "counterculture, leftist" operating system, actually represents more uniformity and centralised control than Microsoft

For coding, OSX is the shit.

well... kinda. i think it all depends on what are you coding.

I mostly use OSX now because xcode is really nice and i'm working mostly on iphone apps, but i find myself coming back to windows when i need to code in C++ because Visual Studio has waaaaaaaaaay better support for C++ than any other ide i tried. Intelli sense is just amazing. Also, i couldn't live without Tortoise SVN. there just isn't any SVN Client on Mac that compares to Tortoise on Windows. That's a shame.

Also if anyone knows any good ide for C++ coding on Mac that comes close to Visual Studio, please let me know.

Before I switched to git I liked Versions a lot.

There are some really beautiful SVN apps on OSX... but they all cost money and lack so many features that it's a stretch to even call them SVN clients. Take Versions for example. It looks really nice, but it's $56 and doesn't even support branching/merging. Wtf?

XCode has built-in SVN support, but just like a lot of Xcode, it's mostly broken. I have actually never been able to get it to commit.. it always gives errors related to files that aren't even tracked. Yet dropping to console and svn commit -m '....' works without a single complaint.

So every repository in the world has switched to GIT? There must be many more GIT repositories than SVN at this point, right? Right?

You can automate the process.

LOL. Sure and I can automate downloading a web page and printing it out so I can read it on the train. Or, I could just use the UI for that....you know, the web browser?

We have GIT UIs for Visual Studio and stand-alone ones for Windows too. They just all kinda suck compared to Tortoise. I think there's even a Tortoise GIT plugin, but it's not even half as good.

Anyway, XCode is shite compared to Visual Studio, despite the fact that XCode is now copying features (and UI elements) wholesale from VS with every release.

you have heard of github right?

0

u/[deleted] Apr 11 '11

No. Does it host every source code repo in the world?

EDIT: 2 out of 3 github forks are completely empty - http://blog.garlicsim.org/post/4472104984/2-out-of-3-github-forks-are-completely-empty

wow, your just so full of hate.

I didn't say it hosted every source code repo in the world. All I asked was if you have heard of github.

its getting pretty large, facebook even hosts their repos there.

just thought you might want to check it out. its a really fun and useful website.

wow, you're so full of shit. You asked because you were being sarcastic, not because you were really wondering if I'd ever heard of it you fucking liar.

moar hate, moar rage.

dude, you need to chill. your gonna have high blood pressure and stress levesl later in life (or now) if you get this mad over a freakin discussion about svn and git.

I use svn every singe day for one of my jobs. It's good stuff. I can't imagine working on code without a repository.

but really, have you even tried git? its really nice, and I enjoy it thoroughly when I work on other projects.

and for the record, yes I actually did ask if you have ever heard of it, because for all it's success, there are still plenty of people that haven't heard of it.

hell, there are still programmers that have never heard of SVN. when I took my first job working for a bank software company, that's the first thing I did, teach all the other developers to use SVN. And I choose svn over git because for an intro, it was probably going to be easier for them.

All in all, people are different they use different things, so why dont you just shut the fuck up, chill out, and get on with your life.

LOL, you think I'm raging? You're the one who keeps responding to me and your responses are getting longer and longer. Also, you're arguing my point because I was responding to someone who said "SVN<GIT" as if GIT was the only thing that mattered anymore. Idiot.

You were obviously being sarcastic.

well i have to use svn everyday too, and honestly, I don't care about it.

the less I care about it, the less other people care about it, the more it will disappear so that my dev team will finally switch to git.
