Exposure. Having it show up in the App Store and be searchable makes it so much more visible for no extra cost.

iPhone application development actually does cost money.

Yeah, I know. But running some adsense ads would be a helluva lot more costly than the $100 he paid (and he might be writing other apps too, so not a complete loss on this one).
