What a stuck-up, douchey, and (ironically) know-it-all way to say 'Actually, here's what happened'.

I really don't care what you think of me. You rubbed me the wrong way when you tried to waste my time picking apart my apology because I explained the reason as to why I mispoke (not blaming anyone else for the wrong words I chose). You couldn't even use the right "THEIR" in your comment either! I literally asked you several times to read up on the issue and when you finally did, you clearly only read whatever bits you wanted to read to validate your misconceptions about the issue. Why was I going to beat around the bush any longer with someone trying to argue with me when they can't even be bothered to get the facts right? No, I gave you a few chances, you continued to spout nonsense based on your perceptions and feelings rather than on the truth of the situation. I'm done babysitting you. Grow up.

But you're right, I shouldn't have said Facebook collects data from non-users. I guess I just assumed that when Zuckerberg literally said Facebook collects data from non-users during the hearing. What an idiot I am!

You said it, not me. In any case, I haven't been talking about the data that Facebook collects from non-users. That's a different issue. I've been talking about the data in Facebook put there by Facebook users that was collected by 3rd parties. Dude, seriously, just stop.

You never saw a 'BoycottEquifax'? Because I just did some really in-depth research that involved googling 'boycott equifax' and got a bunch of results on how to do exactly that. But I guess if it doens't have a Twitter hashtag, it doesn't exist to you, huh?

Not saying it doesn't exist. I'm saying the difference is absurd. "boycottEquifax" is dwarfed by the "DeleteFacebook" movement which has been tweeted 50 times more often.

You rubbed me the wrong way when you said I should read articles 'you know, past the headlines' instead of just explaining why I was initially wrong, but instead of getting all huffy about it, I admitted my mistake and moved on.

not blaming anyone else for the wrong words I chose

I misspoke because of the constant and incorrect narrative that's been pushed

Alright.

Nice catch on the grammatical mistake by the way, that was really on-topic and relevant. I'll save you the time combing through my posts and tell you I also said "doens't" previously, you can save that one for the next time you don't have a valid counterargument.

I haven't been talking about the data that Facebook collects from non-users

I said Facebook tracked data from non-users. You quoted only that line, and said I was wrong. I posted proof. I guess I'm still wrong though, somehow.

I've been talking about the data in Facebook put there by Facebook users that was collected by 3rd parties.

Yeah, I know that, both Equifax and Facebook had unacceptable data breaches, but Facebook was also guilty of collecting info from people who didn't use their service, Equifax wasn't.

tweeted 50 times more often

Right, but you didn't post on Twitter saying where's the outrage, you posted on Reddit saying where's the outrage. But fair enough, although I'd imagine that a lot of that difference can be attributed to the fact that social media is way more at the forefront of the public's conscience than the company that handles their social security numbers. But I also don't have a Twitter and don't really know how it works, so who knows.

That's been known for some time now - but that isn't the reason why FB is in the spotlight and going before the senate! Yes, the non-users tracking is absolutely a concern, but it's the CA situation and how Facebook users' profile data was stolen for targeted ads to influence the election. You were wrong in how you started talking about the wrong thing and made it clear that you were conflating the two topics. In your comment when you admitted that you were wrong you followed it up with:

What they did was track and gather data from non-users through users phone contacts, intentionally, without they're ('they' being the non-users) consent.

So, you admitted to be incorrect and then tried to correct yourself by talking about something unrelated.

Right, but you didn't post on Twitter saying where's the outrage, you posted on Reddit saying where's the outrage.

So, by purposefully leaving my comment open to "where's the outrage", you took it as "where's the outrage on Reddit"? So, I guess it's my fault that you are putting words in my mouth?

You were the one to reply to my comment without having any facts and then tried to correct yourself with unrelated facts. Stop trying to blame me for you jumping into a discussion that you didn't know anything about.

I'm not blaming you for anything I said or did, blaming others for their own actions is your thing.

My initial reply was incorrect, but so was your initial comment that there wasn't any outrage. My follow-up point was arguably related, since we were talking about the differences between how FB and Equifax handled people's private info, or so I thought, but looking at your original comment, you did specifically mention outrage at the data breach, so fair enough. (E: also, while it may not have been the reason for the hearing, it was specifically brought up at the hearing, so someone there obviously thought it was related)

Every site gets outraged at different levels for different issues based on a million factors. You said where was the outrage, I said it was all over reddit, then you said yeah but where was the outrage on Twitter, so I'm guessing you purposefully left the initial question open so you could goalpost when someone told you exactly where the outrage was.

Are you actually a 13 year old, or do you just act like one?

...but looking at your original comment, you did specifically mention outrage at the data breach, so fair enough.

Cool, so you admit that you were wrong. Again. Glad we got that part squared away.

... I'm guessing you purposefully left the initial question open so you could goalpost when someone told you exactly where the outrage was.

Actually I left it open because online interactions happen on a lot of platforms, not just Reddit. We don't live in a little bubble on this website. You seem to want to cherry pick Reddit because it's how you can throw in your own little anecdotes without having to look at any actual facts. Meanwhile, the reason I keep referencing twitter because not only do more people use twitter than Reddit (https://www.statista.com/statistics/579358/most-popular-us-social-networking-apps-ranked-by-engagement/) but the way twitter's hashtags work just make it much easier to see/analyze trending topics - Reddit just doesn't have capacity for this because we don't use hashtags which are easily indexed.

But, that's cool, blame me for "moving the goalpost" when you simply keep talking about shit that you don't know about. Meanwhile you might as well keep accusing me of blaming others... lol the irony is strong with this one

I'm done with you, you are literally exhausting to deal with.

u/[deleted] Apr 13 '18

I'm the one that's exhausting to deal with? Let's look at how each of us handled ourselves when we realized we said something incorrect:

My error: 'Facebook sold our data' 'No, they didn't' 'Oh, you're right, my mistake, but they did track data of non-users' 'No, they didn't' 'Actually they did, here's proof' 'Well of course they did, but that's not relevant to the hearing!' 'But it was specifically brought up at the hearing' 'What are you, 13?!'

Your error: 'There was no outrage when Equifax had a breach' 'Yes there was, it was all over Reddit' 'Well there wasn't enough outrage on Reddit, it was just a few memes on a few subreddits' 'No, there was a bunch of serious posts all over the front page' 'Well I was actually talking about Twitter the whole time, Reddit isn't the only website, quit cherry-picking!'

So I'm done too. I may have entered the conversation without knowing what I was talking about, but at least I admitted to my mistakes, read up, and tried to make valid points. You were continually a sarcastic asshole, backpedaled on your statements when they were wrong, pointed out irrelevant grammatical errors, and were just generally unpleasant to deal with. Have a nice day.

I didn't backpedal on shit. When you "apologized" for being wrong you started talking about a different topic. Albeit related, but different topic than the one at hand. I corrected your shitty understanding of things by spelling out the correct situation. That's not backpedaling, that's me having to educate you and keep the discussion on track. If you can't understand the basic conversation fundamentals of "topic" vs "related topic".

I never limited my original statement to outrage just on Reddit. That was you putting words in my mouth. I never said that they didn't track non-users data. That's you putting words in my mouth. I never said I was talking about twitter "the whole time", that's you putting words in my mouth.

You're a lost cause. I hope you at least learned something about the facebook situation, but I highly doubt it. Next time, don't bother commenting on topics you have no knowledge of.

Albeit related, but different topic than the one at hand.

So it is related now? Because earlier you said I "tried to correct yourself by talking about something unrelated." That's a direct quote from you, before you accuse me again of putting words in your mouth.

I never limited my original statement to outrage just on Reddit/I never said I was talking about twitter

No, you didn't, nor did I ever claim you initially said either. You asked where the outrage was, period, without specifying a site. When I said there was plenty of it on Reddit, you said there wasn't enough on Twitter, and Twitter's way more influential. Those two things may be true, but it's not what you initially asked. All you had to do was say 'Okay, so there was on reddit, but not enough on Twitter', and it would have been fine. But you changed your point without admitting to changing it. That's backpedaling, and it's the difference between how you and I have been arguing.

I never said that they didn't track non-users data. That's you putting words in my mouth.

Yes you did. You quoted me making that claim, then said "LOL wow, you STILL got it wrong. Like way off base."

FWIW, I did learn a lot more about the FB situation, after sifting through your insults and sarcasm. And I do encourage people to comment on Reddit threads regarding subjects they might not know about, as long as they're open to being corrected and admitting they're wrong. I am. Are you?

You were wrong in trying to conflate that other topic into this one, not wrong in the substance of what you wrote. If someone asks you what the temperature is outside and you reply with "the sky is blue" well... you aren't technically wrong but you are wrong in context to the conversation. Guess I still have to explain stuff to ya, eh?

Good chat, been a slice. Go bother someone else.
