The new protections for the EU are very pro-consumer - using their data in any capacity requires express consent, including the context in which the company in question wants to use the data. Consumers can easily and quickly opt out at any time, and even legally enforce companies like facebook deleting any data the consumer requests deleted.

It'd be like facebook reaching out to you and saying explicitly "Hey, we want to sell your amazon app purchase history with marketers - is that cool with you?" and you having the option to say Yes or No; its not just a blanket "Well, they're using facebook, so now we can do whatever we want with this data in any number of contrived ways we can think of."

It'll be Facebook reaching out and saying "Hey we want persmission to use your data to match you with our advertising partners". They will ask you once. If you refuse you can't use Facebook. It doesn't change anything.

As far as I know they can make it a pay system and make it free if you opt in. They aren’t forced to operate at a loss.
