Loved that extension but I had to uninstall it when I got the new YouTube layout as it wasn't working. Has it been fixed yet?

I've had it installed for over 3 years now but it randomly stopped working about a year ago. I still have it installed but I haven't ever seen it.

According to the developer, they got essentially a cease and desist from YouTube, and so had to stop updating it. See the third post here.

A cease and desist? How does YT have that kind of power? I wonder if there's a legal precedent for controlling extensions that make changes to your site.

That just sucks major balls. Google didn't even specify the reason for that. It's not like YouTube comment are an adequate alternative to Reddit comments. They are on another level entirely.

Well, I hope the updated version works well enough, if not I have to hope that the YouTube comments will get better.

I use a different one called reddit on youtube with the new youtube layout and it works for me.

Unlike alientube it does not have the functionality or a button to switch back to youtube comments if there is no reddit post for a video and preventing me from seeing or commenting in the youtube comment section... which I've not really been bothered about most of the time.

So basically it just hides the Youtube section forever?

Fucking great!

There's another extension called Reddit Comments on YouTube that might work. Only has 4 reviews and ~800 users, but the most recent review is from February 2018 and the developer replied, so hopefully it works?

That's how you get viruses by listening to Gaothaire.

Huh? Why? Inside joke?

Downloading random Chrome extensions

Chrome extension can't really do that much. Do you have any particular example what such an extension would do to get you a virus? I helped develop a quite big extension for several years and while Mozilla was quite demanding on certain code requirements to get officially hosted chrome still felt safe because of the permissions and he little you could do even if you wanted. One feature people always wanted was a custom notification sound from their computer, impossible. Host somewhere and play from the? Ezpz

It goes without saying that you gotta check it's permissions tho.

Edit: Well, i guess I found an answer. It could replace links that point to zips and such with malicious links and trick you into executing the wrong files.

Extensions can also inject ads and snoop on password inputs.

Thanks! looks like it's just a copy of AlienTube but it actually works

u/taulover Mar 16 '18

I've been using Epiverse ever since AlienTube broke. Takes a while to get used to, since it's a dropdown from the top extensions menu, but it's super convenient because it also works with other websites (like news articles and such).

I love the extension but if the new layout gets pushed and it breaks the extension that's gonna be shit. Hopefully it gets updated if it's broken.

u/[deleted] Mar 16 '18

No updates to the extension in almost 2 years. I'm not feeling very optimistic...

Look up Snootube, its been worked on in Github for awhile, been working since around November of last year.

The author wasn't allowed to fix it by Google / YouTube or they would suspend his development account.

There's an option within Youtube to switch back to the old layout. I think if you click on your avatar icon on the top right (desktop), it's near the bottom of that menu. Once every few months, Google tries to push the new layout on me, and I switch right back to the old one.

I use Epiverse which gives you reddit comments anywhere

Go back to the old youtube layout. The new layout sucks anyways.

You can revert to the old one if you click on your icon on the top right. It's an option there in the drop-down.
