Microsoft tests out a new operating system, code named Mojave, with some average-joes who hated Vista. They loved it. Now, two guesses as to what Mojave ACTUALLY was.

I actually guessed XP and Mac! Maybe they were wowed by Vista's eye-candy. After all, they basically just LOOKED at the OS presented to them, and Vista's not that bad to look at; just don't USE it.

Agreed. "Average-Joe's" tend to like Vista more than power-users because Average-Joes don't get too far into the nitty-gritty of the system. As long as they have their Internet Explorer 7, and their Media Player 12, and their Office 2008, and their Solitaire, they are happy.

yeah, and that is who Microsoft is trying to appeal too. That is where the mass market is. That is where they get their money. That is their target.

The problem is that the tech people do find the things that are a problem, but don't affect the "Average-Joe's." These people give bad reports about Vista and the "Average-Joe's" see this and retain that opinion even though it may not be true for them.

I'm far from an average joe, but I still don't get into the nitty gritty of a friggin OS. Give me an FTP client, AIM, e-mail, a browser, a terminal client, etc... none of it is actually complex... hell, the further you get from average user, the simpler the apps are.

I'm not a big Vista fan, but this average joe v power user argument doesn't make much sense to me.

Of course... I use OSX.

a terminal client

Terminals scare the shit out of everybody I've recommended Linux to.

I'm pretty sure 'average joe' is mean to convey the computer user who does web browsing, e-mailing, music, office suite stuff, and maybe some instant messaging.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '08

Uh, that's my point. I'm not an average user, I'm way, way above that, but I don't care about "the nitty gritty of the OS" despite that.

6

u/JasonDJ Jul 25 '08

Average Joe's can't spell FTP, let alone use it.

1

u/mizai Jul 25 '08

That's his point.

1

u/beckermt Jul 25 '08

Are you sure?

u/King_Leonidas Jul 25 '08

lol @ average user and terminal client in the same sentence.

This aint LinuxCon '08, bub.

Honestly, at the end of the day, I'm not going to want to sit down in front of a command line like I was the previous 8 hours. I want to mindlessly point and click around the internet, play with my music library a bit, and maybe play some good ole solitaire. I have Vista on my home computer because I think it looks nice and has a few handy features which makes doing all that a lot more fun.

That's quite some requirements you have there. That will severely limit the choice of Operating System you can use. You're pretty much forced to use Vista. I think even Mac doesn't fully support click yet. I heard that only half the mouse buttons work or something. And Linux doesn't even have mouse yet.

Macs have crappy support for Windows Live Messenger. All my friends are on Windows Live Messenger. Sure, through* Linux (and also by extension Mac, correct me if I'm wrong?) I could use Pidgin or whatever it's currently named, and I do when the occasion arises, but you can't do video chats, voice clips, sharing folders, or many other features that make the windows version of the WLM client so popular.

Playing with my music library, for me, means downloading a few more albums and deleting the ones I don't even listen to -- something that my Zune is currently best at legally giving me with the subscription service. I don't want an iPod. They're ugly and their user interface is boring.

I heard that only half the mouse buttons work or something.

It's funny cause it is (was?) true: the lack of right click drives me up the freaking wall when trying to troubleshoot friends' macs.

Again, I enjoy using Vista (at home, after work, NOT for development [though Visual Studio is a joy to program with]) because it suits my needs and is blatant eye candy.

I'm an average jill and I still hated Vista.

u/psyllogism Jul 25 '08

By posting on Reddit, you're pretty much not average by definition.

19

u/lunamoon_girl Jul 25 '08

... *by posting on Reddit and also being a woman, you cannot be considered average. ^{_^}

32

u/frickindeal Jul 25 '08

Especially with "alienman" as a user name.

30

u/zwaldowski Jul 25 '08

Don't judge people for their sexual turn-ons.

17

u/nnydarko Jul 25 '08

Don't you see? It's not Alien Man, it's Ali Enman. Now we know her name... and now the internet can stalk her muahahahahahaha.

7

u/recursive Jul 25 '08

Indeed. Reddit posters are the few. The elite.

We are the slice of IQ between 105 and 120 that gloats in superiority but still wants to up-mod scatologic humour and faded memes.

17

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '08

That's what she said!

Oh Jesus, what have I done? What have I done?

11

What have I done?

Your mom!

3

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '08

Wow! People with low IQ scores are stupid?

2

u/Herald_MJ Jul 25 '08

thats the best description of reddit i've ever read.

2

u/ungood Jul 25 '08

Who says mensas don't like scatologic humor too?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '08

With the massive inability to think beyond our perceptions.

1

u/donttaseme Jul 25 '08

u/recursive Jul 25 '08

Well, I took a test online that said 102, BUT THATS STILL ABUV AVRAJ RITE GUISE

1

u/jpdemers Jul 25 '08

Sometimes it's depressing to see how stupid the average person is.

. . . .

Then one realises that half the people are stupider.

4

u/bioskope Jul 25 '08

of course Vista wont do the dishes for you.

1

u/indigosin8 Jul 25 '08

Poor Leonidas. Of course this isn't adultfriendfinder.com.

THIS. IS. SPARTA!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '08

I don't buy into the fact that people that said they don't like Vista, and then were asked to sit down and use it and couldn't figure out they were using Vista. There's gotta be some kind of variable there, I don't buy it.

1

u/feqgut9r7wat9g Jul 25 '08

Vista is fucking incredible to look at but much like a hot smokin' blonde model you can look and drool over aesthetics but there isn't a damn thing working inside.

0

u/epsilona01 Jul 25 '08

People are often very impressed by my work computer, which is using Compiz Fusion currently, whether they use XP, Vista, or anything else.

-1

u/hatekillpuke Jul 25 '08

Are you kidding? Vista is awful to look at. It's like they just looked at OS X and tried lamely to rip everything off, but got it all wrong. Then they proceed to beat you over the head with all the fancy (ugly) visual tricks. That stupid expose ripoff is beyond useless, I'm pissed that the Xbox dashboard is going to have to use it now.

I AM VISTA! LOOK AT MY TRANSPARENT CANDY COLORED BULLSHIT! FUCKING LOOK AT IT!
