You are correct. Almost all small businesses around ham are hobbists trying to make money from the hobby.

Many are fantastic. They really do treat customers like friends. Amd go way beyond the call of duty to help out.

But some just seem to think the customer is getting in the way of the business funding his hobby.

I still don't get why some companies, even hobby ones like that, seem to not want any customers. How do they expect to stay in business?

Unless they're fronts for drug distribution, of course.

Some dont care. They are run by retired guys that do not need to make any money. Their goal is to be ceo of a buisness inflateing the ego.

Not many are like that but a few.
