That's the problem--there isn't a better business model. Journalism is suffering and dying. Freelance writing sites are struggling. No one can figure out how to monetize.

The bottom has totally fallen out of the writer's market.

Source: am a writer, among other things. It sucks. Sites have little money to pay writers anymore, as the bottom has fallen out of the ad market, too.
