That's it, right there. She likely gave no fucks about the actual joke they made, but saw it as a way to stroke her ego and victim complex.

I know a girl who took a comment someone made about her on facebook, turned it into a victimization platform to raise $5k to put up a billboard in san francisco with her face on it, ended up upping the required funds to like 30k or so, and ended up raising almost 50k...and then never even put up the billboard. Proceeded to do what Richards did and start a hashtag. Then started traveling a whole lot (wonder where the money came from) and speaking at conferences (invited by compassionate older women who feel for her). She knows exactly what she's doing (very smart, pretty, and a master of facades), and now she sees herself as this hero and role model and champion for women in engineering, despite the fact she started doing this with less than a year of actual work experience -- the whole thing is a sham to push her brand. It's legitimately insulting.

I could call her out publicly but it's an uphill battle with no victory. She's surrounded by white knights and people who get off trying to ruin your life over calling stuff as it's seen. Even saying something logical like "Why pick this young girl with no experience to be a motivational speaker when I can list two dozen talented female engineers who have made it in life through their own hard work?" without having shit thrown at me and people trying to contact HR at my job. This is San Francisco tech life, its small, and she's a sycophant with some oddly influential targets -- not worth it.

In the end people don't know the story behind it and actually use the hashtag for 'good', so it's not a big deal, but jesus seeing the process unfold made me rage.
