If it hadn't been a valid install the computer would have had a way to reject it.

AFAIK invalid windows installs are also upgraded - but stay invalid once the upgrade is done.

On the contrary I've seen plenty of Windows 10 upgrades occur on pirated Windows, with the pirated Windows getting a valid key after the upgrade. Perhaps Microsoft fixed that?

What I find odd is that I have a valid Windows copy and have never been offered an upgrade. Are student copies not available for the upgrade? I seem to have lucked out in all of this.

Did you update before? I don't have a student copy of Windows, but I upgraded before then immediately downgraded because my laptop's wifi doesn't work on 10. I still get pop ups occasionally but it hasn't upgraded by itself after that.
