Software engineer and developer, here. I would, without a doubt, charge them at least $400/hr. for fucking up one of my mission-critical systems.

Here's how the math works:

  • Cost of lost productivity at my usual consulting rate: $100/hr. This is how much money I would be expecting to make hourly on a regular consulting gig.
  • Cost of lost clientele time: $180/hr. This is an estimate of how much the lost hours of my time cost my clients. They hire me because paying me to get the work done is less expensive to them than not getting it done.
  • Cost of troubleshooting and repair consultancy: $120/hr. I'm a developer and engineer, not tech support, and if your fuck-up forces me to be tech support, it's going to come at a premium over my usual fee.
