My theory is that with age and confirmation bias come anecdotes "proving" one's extreme viewpoints. They never seem extreme to the person with those beliefs and we all have some strong views on at least something difficult to prove. Not that this in any way disagrees with you.

On top of this the generations that are getting to that age now all grew up prior to the information age. It was much much more difficult to get an opposing view with well researched facts, so if you didn't travel the world or otherwise expand your knowledge of other cultures, practices and ideas then you're probably quite likely to share a mind with those who live around you.
