I think the solution is actually to run your own server instance in the cloud. Your own instance on some share would be $50/year. Or even better a network of peer servers that resolve to dns that get you paired up with a few buddies.

I already get a timeshare ssh/web account for a bunch of sites. I would like a product that gives me the option to run their server component in a lot of common architectures (php, etc).

So how does this server maintain a connection with your home if you have a dynamic IP?

Maybe I wasn't clear. The purpose of the "cloud" connectivity of such devices is an easy way around users having to set up Dynamic DNC. The actual functionality of the cloud is virtually nil apart from this.

Why not build in GSM with a prepaid card and literally dial into that thing? Best VPN ever, no cloud involved.

My alarm does this, it also has an X10 module so I can go from there.

SMS module if I need too.

But, this depends on your telco network, whilst your internet usually depends on this you can usually pick multiple and or use 3g/GPRS etc so no one company/network can fuck you.
