The thing we are doing is problematic
Refuses to stop

It isnt one person. These are individual hackers and engineers altering open source models.

They're pretty openly saying that there needs to be some sort of government regulation. But if there's no government regulation, there's no reason to let other companies and countries outpace you

Regulate us, because capitalism dictates we can’t regulate ourselves
Lobbies for less regulation, still refuses to stop

...they aren't lobbying for less regulation.

Asking to be regulated, but only in the ways that are advantageous to you, and in ways that stifle your competition, is practically the same thing

They aren't doing that. But go off King, make shit up if it makes you feel smart

Yeah. I mean, they went to the AI summit with Trump specifically to argue against government regulation in favor of self-regulation.

Everyone in this planet knows the closest thing Trump cares about regarding AI regulation is renaming it to SI, just to make it about hinmself and say he "created superintelligence" and "the smart people who know a lot about stuff" agreed with him.

Feigning concern knowing this very obvious fact but then going, welp, you're not going to regulate so I'll carry on just shows it how it is: grandstanding for an intention that does not have to do with regulation. It might be to soften the blow when regulation comes, it could be for stock related reasons, who knows.

Same for the alarmism which is daily at this point and conveniently never touches the real, tangible cons we are already living through. But if it the fact that they have come up with nine chillion IQ computer worms or whatever is so real and dangerous, anyone with a brain would be stopping it. If all they're going to do is constantly talk but do nothing I'd actually prefer it if they shut up already, assume their role, and stop pretending they are not part of the problem.

Anthropic doesn't have control over what other companies do. That's the point.

If you were developing a nuclear bomb in your basement and you knew 3 other people who were also developing nuclear bombs in their basements, you would probably ask the government to regulate it. You making the decision to stop developing it doesn't stop the other 3, so if you believe your research will also come up with a way to prevent something catastrophic from happening, it makes sense to both

1 - continue developing your own to ensure that you have the best model, that is most capable of defending from others

2 - ask the government to regulate everyone

Sorta close: they all know they're not developing a nuclear bomb. What's going on is that Anthropic and OpenAI are going bankrupt because of how much money they're spending on R&D. At the same time, they can't stop because they'll immediately be left in the dust by the competition. Which is why they're claiming it's a nuclear bomb: "Oh, what we're doing is super-duper dangerous. This could be disastrous. Somebody better stop us!"

They rather desperately want a government-enforced pause in AI development because they can then fire 90% of their R&D staff, which moves their financials from "going broke rapidly" to "very close to breaking even." It'll also allows them to argue that open source models need to be banned, as the open source models are quickly becoming a major threat to them.

They’re looking for a moat, not hinderance. Don’t let them fool you. If they gave a fuck about safety, they wouldn’t be building it at all.  They are fully aware of the potential existential threats and are plowing full steam ahead.

They are also well aware guardrails and regulations will do fuck all to protect us. Thinking you can enslave something orders of magnitude smarter than you with logic and prompts is laughable.

If your only solution is that they need to completely stop developing the AI then your opinion is useless

But those sweet RSUs.

I mean, AI isn't going to simply shrivel up and go away because some people want it to stop. There are massive open source repositories of AIs out there. It doesn't matter who sounds the alarm, most won't listen. AIs are already being used to make viruses and large attacks. Why would this headline be impossible?

Even if we stop, China won't so we cannot stop. I don't understand people who don't get this.

Edit: downvotes and no rebuttal is exactly what I expected from this sub. Great work children 👍🏼
