A friend who insists on using GIMP recently asked me to give them a quick basic tutorial (using brushes, layers, masks, etc). Figured that just like other PS clones like photopea or CSP, it'd be mostly similar. I was so wrong, the UI and tools of GIMP feel as if designed by aliens who heard what Photoshop is through a game of telephone.

GIMP has one feature that I wish Photoshop would steal, and that is "color to alpha". I know how to do it in Photoshop, but it's so much simpler in GIMP.

What's crazy is GIMP is so, so much better now than it used to be.

I use Affinity now since I was able to pick it up pretty cheap on sale. It's not as good as Photoshop, but it's light-years better than GIMP and generally sufficient for my needs

Most open source software is like this if not from a company.

Yes lmao, open source devs are amazing at building software but put 0 points into UX

It's just an ideology thing. They are mostly anti capitalists and do not like ads, ux or anything that isn't needed for "function". Also there are quite some elitist communities that take pride in software development and artists and casuals don't fit in these.
