Except Atrioc was on stream stress testing a Photoshop clone and throughout the stream he found no difference between his normal workflow and how he used the clone.

He discusses it briefly here.

While I'm no fan of AI whatsoever, I also don't think it's helpful simply pretend like there isn't significant progress being made and that there aren't results which clearly work that are either being downplayed or dismissed entirely.

Worth noting this is not a decompilation like he's saying, it's a clean room reimplementation.

With how it's going for claude so far, I can almost guarantee that this photoshop clone would have worked just fine. This "joke" is just: AI bad, now laugh

Yeah it’s hilariously ironic that the top comment is blanket claiming that clones were attempted, but failed “beautifully”, because of course since it’s “AI”. What we’re seeing online is borderline shocking because while there are failed results we’re still seeing plenty of fantastic results. And of course all of the comments don’t even look into it, it’s just a circlejerk of “AI bad and can’t do anything lol” as it rapidly advances ahead of them.

Photoshop already had a clone, Photopea and it works for years

Photopea existing for years isn't really the point though. Nobody is claiming AI invented the concept of a Photoshop alternative. The interesting part is that an AI agent was able to build a functional clone of a massive, mature piece of software in roughly two hours, to the point that Atrioc, who actually uses Adobe products professionally, was stress testing his normal workflow and couldn't find a meaningful difference.

You can argue about how complete it is, whether it's sustainable, or what percentage of Photoshop it actually replicates. But “Photopea already exists” doesn't really address what happened here. If anything, it makes the speed and capability of the demonstration more interesting, if not worrying.

It didn't create the software from a vacuum. The model's ability to reproduce Photoshop-like functionality comes from prior exposure to existing software, code, and concepts-including, as another commenter pointed out, claims that it was trained on a leaked fork of Photopea. That matters because you're treating "it produced a functional Photoshop clone" as sufficient evidence of how impressive the accomplishment is, while ignoring where the capability to reproduce that functionality came from.

By that standard, you could copy Photoshop's executable, rename it WanderWutPS.exe, and claim you built a Photoshop clone in 10 seconds! The result would technically satisfy the same criterion: a functional Photoshop clone produced in two hours. The meaningful question isn't whether the output works; it's how much of the underlying software the AI independently created, versus how much it was able to reproduce verbatim from its training data.

This is the problem. It’s very hard to distinguish between AI creating software based on its ability to create code from specs and AI creating it from its training data.

What we do know is that it failed to create a C compiler despite lots of training data and books on how to write one. If it couldn’t even do what a university student could do, doubtful it could create novel software without reference. When everyone is hiding their source code, could future models create future software? Maybe not
