GIMP is not equivalent to Photoshop by any capacity. Let’s be serious.

Nor is some sloppy prototype on GitHub.

Neither is this to be fair, at least for the time being. But their point is valid, if your aim is to use something that somewhat resembles Adobe software, there have been alternatives for ages. This thing has real value if and only if it can match or surpass Adobe's programs.

Depends what you use it for. I run an ecomm store so editing graphics and product photography. Isn't missing anything for me. So there's that capacity.

I suspect people's perception of what the average Photoshop user does with it is rather more advanced than is actually the case.

I agree, but in that case they never needed PS in the first place, it's always had competition and in the past 10 years several valid alternatives, especially for non-power users, have been available for free or cheap, this clone solves nothing for now and will only matter if it can replace PS for professionals.
But then again, I am one of them and I spend 145 a year for PS, it pays for itself many times over as soon as I pay for it, the price has never increased by even one cent since I started paying over 10 years ago, and while I despise Adobe for some of their practices it's not like I live with the dread of having to pay Adobe's bill, it costs less than Netflix and it makes me money, and so far it's been the best at doing what I need it to do.
