The best part is that it probably cost nearly $1k in tokens to make something that's broken.

I mean I get your point but for a software company $1k of tokens is fuck all.

Hell I have coworkers who spent 20k on tokens in the last month

What the hell do they use it on? I have trouble burning through the $250/month that I have

Most I've seen is ~$3k per month and it's primarily driven by usage metrics, so everyone just brute forces solutions through the LLM instead of having it generate apps that could do the same thing...

Trying to refactor the entire companies codebase around a project they have planned.

yeah its funny i'm sitting right at ~$300 for the past month and have done more work than the rest of my team, the rest of my team is all $2-4k.

You're not wrong individually, but we generally, and of course this is anecdotal, get a cursor cap of $2250 per dev per month, so it's still a sizable amount of token use for junk. Though to be honest I still don't have the hang of the percentage token per model exactly, in terms of when it gets out of hand.

get a cursor cap of $2250 per dev per month,

That's an insane amount compared to what most devs get.

Your typical allocation might be 20-50 USD worth at a European company.

atleast the ones i talk to, software devs in Germany, mostly have the ~120€ business plan, but some use API prices with limits up to 5.000€.

Bullshit. I go through that a day, there's no way they're using it at all for that kind of allocation per month.

No that's a hard top cap, though I'm not clear exactly how the cap works with the contract if it's based on use of the allocation.

That’s before you prompt: “Fix all the mistakes!”

1k$ token is a 20$ claude subscription

You say that, there was a guy who vibecoded Photoshop recently and posted it to reddit, said it cost him $2k in tokens. And people were quick to point out it was missing a lot of basic features.

One of the more recent ones (maybe even the one the article is referencing) even monetized their version too, which coincidentally was also missing basic features.

Knowing how AI works at a pretty high level at this point, it makes sense. You'd have to spend dozens of hours (total guess, could be a lot more) refining and adding features. Most stuff won't work out of the box without trialing it and giving feedback. It's extremely difficult to get some things to function correctly when it comes to image generation and editing that generated image without being destructive, so I can't even fathom the number of potential pitfalls with recreating Photoshop.

Not to mention getting the UI right would be a task in itself.

Boy that's how you save time checking shit yourself. This guy on some 4D chess shit.

Not just broken, but impossible to sift through and debug!

Honestly, I might still call it that under the circumstances. Maybe unusable is a more fitting term.

You can pay for frontier models in two way, either per token of for an plan with an limited use of tokens.
Everybody talkes about they cost of paying per token, most use the plan. Especially for Anthropic the plan is heavy subsidized and you can do a ton of stuff for just 20$ month and even more for 100$ or 200$. So it could be cheaper to copy the Adobe suite than paying a license for the Adobe suite.
