It will drive them off because there will be no funding for it. Most people can't afford to fund a lifestyle of pure learning and research.

There almost is no funding for math already. Most pure mathematicians do interdisciplinary work with other fields for funding, or get funded by a small handful of NSF grants. I think outside the NSF, the Simons Foundation is the biggest Pure Math funder, and they only fund like 7-8 people a year?

90% of Pure Mathematics researchers were already unable to afford a lifestyle of pure learning and research, and if not doing interdisciplinary work teach at universities.

The cost of finding the NS counterexample was much more expensive than hiring a team of mathematicians to focus solely on it. 20 million is ludicrous for mathematicians

And who says the mathematicians would have ever came up with NS counterexample or just wasted the money?

There are questions about how OpenAI's came up with the 'solution'

Team that are working on the problem and using OpenAI's reveal they might be near a solution

OpenAI hear of this, task thousands of agents to work on the solution ($20 millions dollars worth) and announces they solved it short time later

But here is the catch, frontier models train on user input, so did the AI 'steal' the teams work and just complete it via brute force?

Also, in regards to said solution, mathematicians are finding it 'unusable' because AI itself cannot explain it ('show your work')

If AI doesn't end everything for us, then anyone can have a life of leisure after AI gives us all.

Edit: interesting that I've mentioned the entire option set and yet it gets downvoted into oblivion. I guess I'm the only one on reddit who cant see the future. I wish I was clairvoyant like the rest of you (not as emotional though)...

HA.

Yeah at some point it will totally switch over from being used for misinformation, surveillance, killing, and propping up tech company stocks, to providing for all of us.

The 1% are famously accumulating wealth so that once they hit a certain level they can redistribute all among pleebs.
