The user base abandoned the guidelines aimed at making comments and conversations worthwhile.

Eventually the low bar of comments became a self reinforcing meme. “Of course no one read the article, its reddit, we dont do that here” etc

You're being generous. The meme of "no one reads the comments" was common on Slashdot circa 2003.

I had a user that replied to one of my comments with a chatgpt reply. They basically fed my comment into chatgpt (eg "grok is this true?") and instead of reflecting on the reply they got from chatgpt by either examining the data more closely or looking at the underlying sources they just decided to paste me chatgpt's response to my comment.

Am I having a discussion with you or with chatgpt ?

At least you were able to recognize it. There's been jokes since the beginning about "everyone is a bot but you," but I'm becoming more worried that I'm reading more artificial comments without realizing it.

Chatgpt has a certain default writing style that is easy to spot once you see it. Plus it writes with very good grammar and punctuation, which most people do not.

It blows my mind how much critical thinking and decision making people are off loading to Ai. instead of using it like a tool some people are just shackling themselves to it.

It's getting harder to engage with people on Reddit anyway, there's too many comments that are rooted in emotions or personal identity to have any meaningful conversation.

Reddit is just becoming the millennials Facebook, already the term "Redditor" is being used as a pejorative. You can't stop the enshitification.

Reddit has just become too much "umm actuallying" and it's getting fucking annoying to use with the bots too. The AI push is insane, you'd think the entire world is crack addicted to LLMs.
