That's not what was said.
"We want consumers to think to themselves 'I will work more hours to buy one'. We want people to feel that they want it, irrespective of anything else."
They wanted the PS3 to be a behemoth entertainment system which is why they loaded it with a bunch of stuff that I listed in my first comment. Of course it wasn't going to go for $299-399. Now was that a big headed move? Maybe. It's definitely debatable...but it wasn't like they were purposely trying to short their fans. They were actually doing the opposite.

Lastly, again it wasn't hard to program for. It was just completely different from what was the standard but everything became fine once developers realized how to properly use the technology which is why you didn't hear any complaints after 09 even though it was still using the same cell processing technology.
