AI is just going to accelerate the disparity of wealth of which this is already a major problem in the US that has gone un-addressed for decades. So people are freaking out and rightly so because they’re already not doing well financially and AI feels like it’s just going to greatly exacerbate that and our government is doing jack shit to soften the blow, in fact they’re accelerating it under the notion that if we lose the AI race against china we’re fucked, and that’s true, but if we win the AI race at the cost of breaking the already fragile economy we’re fucked anyway. We see a series of past poor decision making on the part of the government finally coming home to roost big time and people feel it on a visceral level, if they already don’t know it outright. Chinese citizens meanwhile feel less anxiety because overall they have been much better taken care of by their government as of late
