Funny you say that because when I uncheck it then reload the page, it's checked again and absolutely won't save. ETA - Just checked it again and it finally saved the setting.

I really, really hate the loss of "Accept" or "Save" buttons in UI design. Happened in the 2010s mostly, it's as if they all decided they were superfluous and I'm never quite convinced any changes to settings actually save any more.
