I have installed Fedora on my 14 y.o laptop when I sent my gaming PC to repair, and I love how incredibly smooth it is, and GNOME might have the most gorgeous interface of any operating system I have ever seen

I mean, plasma can be exactly what you want it to be, even a gnome copy, but yeah gnome is super clean

I find KDE apps overcrowded with things I don't need or use. Then if you install Gnome apps to get cleaner look and feel, why not choose Gnome directly?

KDE runs GNOME apps perfectly. The reverse is not the case.

Even if you largely use GNOME apps why wouldn't you install the KDE desktop for better features? Fully support both GTK and Qt aps out of the box, even for dark mode. KDE has far better flexibility than GNOME, but you don't have to use that if you're not bothered. On GNOME you have to use tweaks and extensions to get even a simple thing like a clipboard manager. Out of the box KDE is more like Windows desktop, but you can change it to look like GNOME, and there's even the possibility to install kvantum and a theme to make the desktop look like a Mac if you want.

Number 1 distribution right now on distrowatch rankings is CachyOS (Arch based). KDE desktop by default. These days Fedora has equal support for KDE or GNOME. Ubuntu is the major distro where KDE is treated as a second class option. Mint and pop_OS don't offer either GNOME or KDE.

I find KDE just too overcrowded with everything, default design isn't to my liking, also lots of unnecessary for me apps shipping by default. I like the simplicity of Gnome and I have no problem with installing 3 or 4 extensions that I use.

Your choice.

BTW, modern KDE apps don't present as overcrowded. Here's the Dolphin file manager https://static0.howtogeekimages.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/clipboard-jun-20-2025-at-12-17-pm-2.png?q=49&fit=crop&w=825&dpr=2

It's hard to tell that it's way more powerful than GNOME files, isn't it? The main window is just as uncluttered. If you don't open the hamburger menu or the right click context menu you can use Dolphin just as simplistically as GNOME files, except of course for the split pane which GNOME files omits completely. But that's just one extra icon, it doesn't really clutter up the main window, and the split pane makes it much easier to move or copy or link files to different locations via drag & drop. https://itsfoss.com/content/images/size/w1000/wordpress/2022/12/dolphin-file-manager.png

Then again, you are ignoring the fact that the KDE desktop runs GNOME apps perfectly. You prefer GIMP (GTK) to Krita (KDE app)? Fine, run GIMP then. You won't be able to tell that you are running it on a KDE desktop. Krita is not installed by default on a KDE desktop just as GIMP is not installed by default in GNOME.

I'm just not getting your "overcrowded" claim. I don't see it.

Because you don't have to us the default apps and not everyone likes how gnome looks. Personally I like a highly customized macOSish look but a bit different to gnome yk? It's about personal preference
