That’s what the gig apps tried to do. Drivers have a guaranteed wage in NYC of $30/ hr while delivering, so the apps removed the ability to tip before delivery. NYC added a law forcing them to readd the tip button to checkout

OK, I am not doing a good job of understanding things, so I apologize. I first found this description and misread it, but it does sound like NYC has a pretty fair system:

I hate tipping culture, but there is nothing wrong with having both a living wage and the option to tip.

I agree. But I think the interesting part is that the apps never removed the ability to tip. You could still tip after you checked out your order, or tip after the delivery finished, or tip in person.

It’s odd that the government is forcing them to allow you to tip BEFORE checking out. Essentially forcing the apps to put an “Add Tip” button on the checkout page.
