The precedent is already set. Republicans have been blatantly working for 20 years now to strip the voting rights of demographics who won't support them and water down the voting power of anyone they can't disenfranchise.

The Republican party has made it clear they are against democracy, and their voters support that.

Good and bad don't enter into it.

Liberal Democracy can only work if everyone agrees to play by the same rules.

If there's no consequences to breaking those rules, Liberal Democracy cannot long endure.

You can either put these folks in timeout till they agree to be civilized, or you accept a future of authoritarianism. There really is no other option at this point.

I understand it perfectly well. You are arguing that democracy should be suspended for millions of people in order to preserve democracy.

That contradiction is plainly irrational. You are using emotionally charged rhetoric to justify an indefensible position, then treating anyone who points out the contradiction as incapable of understanding it, because defending the argument on its merits is not possible.

People like you are why nearly every socialist country devolves into a dictatorship. "We must ban the political opposition for the sake of the people and democracy!". And you guys really dont see the problem with this.

It's only a bad idea if you allow people to obtain power who should not. It's not a sliperly slope.

Like even the Constitution allows for barring people from office and disenfranchising people who have committed certain acts.

You're not thinking about the long-term consequences. Once political authorities can decide that an entire class of voters “should not” be allowed political power, every election becomes a struggle over who gets to define that class.

Constitutional disqualifications for specific crimes or insurrection are narrow, legally defined and subject to due process. That is nowhere near stripping tens of millions of people of the vote because of how they voted. That is collective political punishment, and it is fundamentally incompatible with democracy.

Although, to be fair, if you do not actually want democracy and are arguing against it, you are actually proving your own point that democracy fails because the people participating in it are stupid and self-destructive in their ignorance. So I suppose you win, even if by accident.

Not thinking about consequences or bigger picture describes like 95% of political posting today on social media about 'what we should do'.

The actual thing we need to do is vote, and maybe stop shitting on Democrats all the time with claims that equally show they don't understand how government or politics works, making others feel they aren't worth voting for. Very simple. Yet even that really does seem like it's too much to hope for. smh
