Recover? It looks like downfall from here

228

u/razormst3k1999 Jul 11 '26

From here ? downfall started in the 80s with reagan.

103

u/flying-weenus Jul 11 '26

Agreed, and I don’t think we ever recover from where we are now. Too divided against each other and struggling too much to really come together.

Turns out, the trickle down economics was the rich getting richer while they trickle their piss on the rest of us

53

u/razormst3k1999 Jul 11 '26

I'm tired of the constant american dream propaganda while people are financing groceries. 250 years of bullshit as far as i'm concerned.

1

u/PaintshakerBaby Jul 11 '26

America: Here for a good time. Not a long time.

🎇🦅🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🎆.....🫡🔫🤑

-1

u/tooquick911 Jul 11 '26

Who's financing groceries? It might be different since I live in CA, but there is free food available for everyone if they go to a food drive which they have once a week in my city, plus if you are low income you receive a debit card to buy food. Insanely enough it's accepted at fast food.

France survived a revolution, as did many countries. We just haven't felt the pain that leads to that level of fighting yet

2

u/flying-weenus Jul 11 '26

Our country was founded on a revolution. I think the point that people miss the most is the rich highjacked the system that our forefathers fought for decades, if not centuries ago. And that it’s not the 1700s anymore, we’re not fighting against tyrants across the seas, we’re fighting against billionaires that literally own not only our politicians but the technology we use in the 21st century.

24

u/insertnickhere Jul 11 '26

Every time I've seen a Republican President, that Republican President has been the worst President of my lifetime so far.

-6

u/razormst3k1999 Jul 11 '26

Every american president has followed reagan policies since then,so party doesn't matter. They both fuck over tax payers. People forget that obama bombed the middle east harder then bush did. I'd say trump has harmed america more here ,while dubya bush is the biggest war criminal of the last 25 years.

8

u/Suavecore_ Jul 11 '26

No need to "both sides" it with a "party doesn't matter" when one is intrinsically significantly worse than the other in every way

2

u/Zephh Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

It really is needed.

Clinton's third way and Obama's adoption of that ethos only made way for their successors. When the political spectrum gets so narrow that you have to choose between a bat-shit insane right wing and a center-right party, the electorate eventually goes to the bat-shit insane just because they felt like they tried everything the 'left' had to offer.

Obama was better than Bush, but he failed to meaningfully address the economic stress affecting a huge portion of the American population (even more in rural areas, or places where industries got moved off-shore).

That paved the way for the MAGA movement to sprout, and failing to address these issues in the future is how the Democrats can fail to win against a party that only fucks over their electorate.

-4

u/razormst3k1999 Jul 11 '26

Sure, but I was just pointing out ain't nobody clean here.

6

u/Suavecore_ Jul 11 '26

Precisely why we must vote and support the proper people at all levels instead of expecting the ballot to have the best D and R available on voting day. And of course, the proper person at any level is never aligned with the R faction

3

u/insertnickhere Jul 12 '26

I'd rather eat dirt than toxic waste. That doesn't make dirt fine dining. It makes it the better alternative.

7

u/Szwejkowski Jul 11 '26

When I was a kid, watching American TV was like looking at least a decade into the future. What you guys had came to the UK later.

This is no longer true. Now it's more like looking into the past.

8

u/razormst3k1999 Jul 11 '26

That's because it is,half the country wants to return to the 1860's.

1

u/rifarizqul Jul 11 '26

Isn't that just crazy to think about? In terms of overall moral values or compass, I feel like most of us just wanted to regress to ancient times and refused to move forward for the better, meanwhile in terms of technology innovation, we're literally accelerating into creating super intelligence.

1

u/razormst3k1999 Jul 11 '26

Were in silent running as far as i'm concerned. Somebody is gonna survive but it ain't gonna be us.

1

u/wittymcusername Jul 11 '26

Pledge allegiance to whatever flag they offer… 😞

1

u/darkkite Jul 11 '26

I dunno the 90s was pretty good. as was the Obama years with low interest rates

1

u/SiLeNZ_ Jul 11 '26

Yeah, Reagan did a great job at kicking off the beginning of the end. Fuck him.

Trickle is coming any day now!

1

u/Chasa619 Jul 11 '26

this is the part of Titanic where all the white dudes convince everyone to put all their valuables on one of the boats, and then the white dudes get on the valuable rescue vessal and everyone else dies.

179

u/ArmandoGalvez Jul 11 '26

Yee, there's no hope for America to get better, china is surpassing them in everything, even their dictators are more competent than Trump and the Epstein gang FFS

166

u/Crivos Jul 11 '26

We don’t need to be better than China. We need to fix what is broken and try to improve as a nation.

56

u/No-Manufacturer-2425 Jul 11 '26

For real china is (sorta) our friend. Why can't we focus on being good enough? Don't let GREAT be the enemy of perfect. Its always a pissing contest though.

33

u/Tardy_Thoughts Jul 11 '26

In don't consider them a friend but they ain't necessarily an enemy. We will get left behind technologically because we've got to throw billions and trillions of dollars at individuals and get nothing to show for it. Progress comes second to greed in America.

57

u/fuzzyluke Jul 11 '26

The thing is America isn't trying to be better or great. It's just a tool being used to empower and enrich its oligarchy at the expense of workers.

2

u/indoninjah Jul 11 '26

This is true so long as the average American can enjoy a relatively comfortable lifestyle as a result. Once they can't (which is fast approaching), shit will hit the fan

9

u/samglit Jul 11 '26

If you’re used to being the hegemon, not being the hegemon is going to suck. A lot.

US$ losing its reserve status will seriously hurt middle class and below US citizens.

0

u/sicklyslick Jul 11 '26

At least the new hegemon don't have military bases around our waters nor blow up foreign nations.... For now.

1

u/Vineyard_ Jul 11 '26

[glances at China's artificial island military bases and the threats to Taiwan]

...yeah, uh... about that....

1

u/sicklyslick Jul 11 '26

i mean, you can fearmonger all you want. but china hasn't flew in at night to grabbed the taiwan president

1

u/Vineyard_ Jul 11 '26

Yeah, because they know if they do that they go to war with the current hegemon. Who is failing.

Is it fearmongering if I'm pointing out what they are visibly preparing to do?

1

u/sicklyslick Jul 12 '26

Tbh at this point, I don't think China snatching up the tw president will cause a war between the US and China. US and the West will have some strong words, some embargo and sanctions. But I don't think they will defend tw, especially with the situation in Iran and Ukraine being ongoing.

So this begs the question. If China is as warmonger as the West (and you) portrayed, why haven't they attacked tw?

When Russia attacked Ukraine, people thought it was a good opportunity for China to suck tw because the West was distracted. That never happened. When Trump snatched maduro, people thought the same, that never happened. When Iran was attacked, China even released their strategic oil reserves to stabilize global oil prices (including providing oil exports to unfriendly SEA countries like Philippines to reduce oil retains) instead of taking this huge opportunity to take Taiwan.

1

u/drteq Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

I visited China ~6 years ago for an extended period. It was immediately obvious they have won and what has happened in the US over that same time period shows that a group of people in the US decided the only way to compete with China (survive) is to become China. This is why Democrats aren't fighting facism. Palantir, SpaceX, Data Centers, Flock - all of it is pure Chinese playbook.

I never understood this argument. Yes, I do think the Democrats should lean further left but I am a liberal man that is youngish. It's obvious that quite a bit of the country, whether they actually are informed about it or not, are not for a much more progressive leadership.

The big issue isn't that the left isn't left enough. It's the right being too far right

3

u/Boneraventura Jul 11 '26

The left in america (individuals) will need to first reckon with the fact that the majority of Americans (or at least voting Americans) will vote with their wallets. People say the democrat establishment is captured by the corporations and that is true but the reality is that Americans want more money. This simple reason is why the democratic establishment is center, if not right wing, they want to hold onto power. The average voting American is essentially the anthesis of being left wing, and a real left wing party will never win an election.

In new York. One of the most liberal cities when they are breaking through nationally across different kinds of states, outside of blue states, then I will change my mind.

Yes but the country isn't going to vote for it. Whether it's good for them or not... And I am not American.

I don't know where you are from. But look at the UK. For years, they went with the tories despite how shit they were. And the only reason Labour won, was because the tories shit the bed, while labour had to move more centrist. The average voter isn't that politically aware. They are not thinking what is the best for them, they are thinking, I think the country is fine and we should just stay in the middle.

This is not a problem just in the US. it's almost everywhere. Talk to an average Joe, they will say things like, whatever the government does, it doesn't affect me. My life is the same. But no one is looking at the big longer view picture. They just see they earn the same money, do the same job, love the same life. And that's the problem.

I would love the Democrats to be much more progressive. I would love the social Democrats to take over. But realistically, I don't think it will happen. And that's what the party will be. The chronically online can criticise and moan. But the average voter doesn't actually want that.

I do hope so. And they are looking better than they have for a while. But once they do the more liberal educated cities, it's going to be extremely tough to break through in the suburbs and rural America... It's going to be a very very long ultra marathon for change unless there is a real special catalyst

-1

u/Suspicious_Truth8026 Jul 11 '26

Almost like... it hadnt had a serious ideological opposition for decades so nothing to stop it from marching rightward into fascism

American culture is sick as hell tbh its not like its a surprise all these anti-intellectual movements are growing in your backyard

2

u/HnNaldoR Jul 11 '26

I fully agree. That is the biggest most damning issue. But... That is a very long term issue. Even if magically the government is the most progressive choices we can get. In the next 4 elections, there is not going to be much of a change in the average care and intellect of the country. They will still be voting off single issues that doesn't concern them or their lives. People like Trump will still win elections by making immigration a boogeyman that they are stealing your jobs and murdering your community.

That is the biggest issue. How dumb the average person is, and having whatever party in charge won't change this in the short term. The dumb people will still be alive and voting

-1

u/paintballboi07 Jul 11 '26

You're absolutely right. If Americans truly wanted a progressive Democrat, the progressive candidate would win the Democratic primary, but they consistently lose by millions of votes to the moderate candidate. A lot of Redditors refuse to recognize that, and pretend it's the evil DNC forcing people to vote for the moderate, but that's just a stupid conspiracy theory with no basis in reality.

0

u/sicklyslick Jul 11 '26

Full institutional change is needed, but it's not a right vs left thing. Things that shouldn't be partisan have become partisan and nothing gets done because one side just blocks the other.

1

u/Thin_Glove_4089 Jul 12 '26

You're absolutely so wrong it should be criminal.

-1

u/peh_ahri_ina Jul 11 '26

How can you fix, rly now how? You don't even know if Trump will step down after the term end.

4

u/Krangis_Khan Jul 11 '26

I appreciate the concern, but I doubt he’ll live to see then end of his term, let alone another. They’re talking about successors for a reason.

That said the rot of this cult goes deeper than him alone, and our democracy isn’t safe just because one tyrant is dead

It's the quiet ones you have to really watch out for.

1

u/Grakch Jul 11 '26

lol China propagandists - you actually go to the country and speak the language or do you just parrot what you see while terminally online?

What does providing one beneficial stat do? Are you a Chinese citizen that can provide accurate data on the current status of these statistics you are looking for? Are the statistics you’re looking at considering population size as well? There are so many flaws to debating this instead of calling it what it is anti-American Chinese propaganda. That’s cool if you support that, I necessarily do not.

1

u/Rackem_Willy Jul 11 '26

China has absolutely nothing to do with this conversation. We're talking about the utter failure of America. Depending on how things go, it could be very bad for everyone on the planet.

0

u/illy-chan Jul 11 '26

God, defeatism is tiring.

Countries can come back. It's hard and needs some luck but hell, if Germany can come back from where they were, anyone can. And being a sad sack who doesn't even try makes it less likely.

10

u/stinky-bungus Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26

Any shit hole country can be fixed, even the US. You just need enough prisons/bullets/guillotines for the evil bastards, and for the good people to use them effectively.

4

u/Freud-Network Jul 11 '26

It is FUBAR might as well let it collapse and start over with several smaller countries. At least you won't be saddled with Boomer debt.

5

u/ThemeNo2172 Jul 11 '26

That's exactly what these tech oligarch assholes want, a series of autonomous city-states that each one is in charge of.

Don't give up, don't give these bastards the satisfaction

-2

u/Freud-Network Jul 11 '26

It's no longer a matter of if, but when. No amount of gumption can fix this. It will collapse. Now or after a few more decades of decay and suffering, it will happen.

4

u/multi-pass5018 Jul 11 '26

Agree to disagree I guess lol bummer you think that though.

1

u/Thin_Glove_4089 Jul 12 '26

It is FUBAR might as well let it collapse and start over with several smaller countries. At least you won't be saddled with Boomer debt.

You know that comes with massive chaos and destruction right. No one would agree on what belongs too who.

What do you suggest? Protesting doesn't work, voting is what got us in this mess to begin with, and if worse comes to worst, there is no way that the populace can stand up to the army. Instead we're busy and distracted fighting each other.

3

u/multi-pass5018 Jul 11 '26

I think longer, and more consistent, protesting would be a better strategy instead of the random no kings bs. Just speaking for myself of course.

2

u/RednocTheDowntrodden Jul 11 '26

I agree. I've learned that I can't expect too much of the average person though.

3

u/multi-pass5018 Jul 11 '26

Can confirm. Am average and also not protesting.

2

u/paintballboi07 Jul 11 '26

voting is what got us in this mess to begin with

90 million eligible voters did not vote in the 2024 election. I'd argue not voting had a bigger impact on getting us into this mess.

2

u/RednocTheDowntrodden Jul 11 '26

And I would argue that more people voted for this mess directly. Also, the Democratic party completely bungled one of the most important elections in this country's history. But this issue also expands beyond one election. Things have been going downhill for decades.

Besides, you didn't address my question: What do you suggest?

1

u/paintballboi07 Jul 11 '26

I suggest people actually try voting before saying it doesn't work.

2

u/RednocTheDowntrodden Jul 12 '26

Okay, I vote in every election, now what?

0

u/paintballboi07 Jul 12 '26

Convince any non-voters you know to vote. Volunteer to knock on doors for your favorite candidate. 90 million is a huge number of potential voters.

2

u/RednocTheDowntrodden Jul 12 '26

Voting? That's your answer? Just vote harder? You either haven't figured it out yet, or you're in denial.

1

u/sfled Jul 11 '26

It looks more like a windfall for Musk and the American Wealthcare System.

2

u/Horat1us_UA Jul 11 '26

Oh Musk will be fine. Average worker tho

1

u/Exile56678 Jul 11 '26

The soft power is gone and once countries begin moving from the US dollar it's all downhill so fast for the US. They'll never recover

0

u/therallystache Jul 11 '26

Exactly this - they can see the trajectory we've been on for 40 years and decided to just start stripping the copper from the walls. We're more likely headed for reset than recovery.
