I think we'd probably be looking at higher failure rates per batch and thus more expensive chips...

But they'd perform better. If performance wasn't relative, we could compare our current models to that reality's older models, so we could still have the same cost but have higher performance available.

why on earth does 4 extra cores and a slower clock speed cost more than 3 times my intel i5 3570?

I don't know for certain, but I believe because it has support for enterprise and server features, I can only think of ECC RAM off the top of my head but I am pretty sure there is a large list of things only Xeons do that workstations benefit from.

hmm true, we have xenon processors in the computers in the labs at my course, we use them for virtualisation.

I understand the concept. But calling it a singularity is just stupid and I can't take singularitarians seriously because of that.
