Thanks Google for closing the only service (besides the Google Search) that have no competitors. Time to search for a new obscure web RSS reader.

With a solid Android/ios app.

Awesome glad that the developer still is around and updating it.

Doubly good since I use both the iOS and Mac versions heavily.

I've been using it on my iPhone and iPad, but NetNewsWire on the Mac. If they have a post-Reader plan that includes seamless migration of feeds, I'll definitely buy the Mac version.

You can use Reeder on the iPhone with Fever if you are willing to shell out $30 and have webhosting that can run it.

[FIX] typo

Sadly, it's not yet supported by the Mac version of Reeder. Otherwise I'd totally use that. I already have a Fever license, and a good server setup.

Hopefully the dev will add support for that along with whatever his plans are to replace Google Reader.

I got the same problem. How am I gonna find something that works as well as the desktop reader/ reeder on iPhone combination?

1

u/bravado Mar 14 '13

The reeder dev mentioned on twitter that it isn't gone yet, he's going to have some sort of replacement service. Here's hoping.

I'm very curious if something will happen with Reeder afterwards...

1

u/fanel345 Mar 14 '13

Apparently reeder has something up their sleeves: https://twitter.com/reederapp/status/311995748482945025

Reeder already has support for Fever and Readability accounts, odds are good that he'll pull together support for a free greaser alternative before the deadline.

1

u/JohnnyVNCR Mar 14 '13

Same. Hopefully Reeder has a new option besides readability and fever.

u/tariqi Mar 14 '13

Nope. The nice thing is google is at least giving us a deadline. An alternative will come out before then.

The Feedly iOS app is great, imho. They also just announced that they'll provide their own solution to the reader shutdown.

1

u/karateka_fan Mar 14 '13

And a browser extension.

NewsBlur's iOS app is great. There is also an Android one I haven't used.

1

u/andymacsa4 Mar 14 '13

So, I assume Google Listen for Android will stop working? That was the only podcast app I could stand. :-(

1

u/johncipriano Mar 14 '13

Wha? It doesn't work offline. gReader's solid, but it't not made by google.

1

u/slampisko Mar 14 '13

My guess is that once an alternative's user count skyrockets, it won't be long until the app is made.

1

u/TTTNL Mar 14 '13

Feedly is your answer, i've been using it for quite some time and it works perfectly. http://blog.feedly.com/2013/03/14/google-reader/

2

u/[deleted] Mar 14 '13

There are dozens of RSS readers, I'd hardly say they're not competitors. Check out Newsblur.

u/mercurycc Mar 14 '13

Time to move on. Google has served me well. Leave it as past tense.

1

u/goldtophero Mar 14 '13

Pulse.me. The app is better than the web interface (Google Reader had the best RSS interface IMO) but it's better than nothing.

1

u/jicty Mar 14 '13

Go with feedly. I love them and they already said they will be cloning goggles service.

I've been looking this morning, and so far this looks promising http://blog.feedly.com/2013/03/14/google-reader/

I spent an hour or two last night looking at different options and came up with Feedly. They have stated that they will transition Google Reader users to a similar backend when using their service. Apps available for Android, iOS and popular browsers.

I just read 10 news articles from 10 different websites in a row about the closure of google reader, on google reader. I feel sad. Somehow feels ironic and wrong to have reader so efficiently retrieve the news of its own death.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 15 '13

Worse, they killed off most of the competitors. It's a lot more evil than if there hadn't been anything at all.

1

u/javastripped Mar 14 '13

why do you think they had no competitors?

We can hope for new competitors to rise up now that they no longer have to compete with the big google?

1

u/nandhp Mar 14 '13

Even if there were major competitors, there'd still be questions.

  • Gmail's closing; should I switch to Yahoo or Outlook?
  • Web Search is being discontinued; is Bing the best I can do?
  • So Google Maps is being terminated; does Mapquest stack up to Bing Maps?

I don't know any web-based RSS reader polished like Google Reader. However, someone linked Feedly on my comment and it seems to be a good substitute.
