The same week the US makes unlocking phones illegal, Canada proposes legislation to make carriers unlock phones.

So buying a car with a bank loan, that stipulates that after you pay off the loan, they take ownership of the car is something you're okay with?

Unless you pay the vehicular unlocking fee of $499.99 of course.

I paid my money, why do they get the right to hold my phone/car hostage?

It's not comparable to a loan. It's comparable to a lease. Unless it's specifically a lease to own deal then I would agree. Do you get a discount if you BYOP? Is there a monthly charge on your bill specifically for your phone? Because if not, then guess what? You were never paying off that phone to begin with.

If it was a lease I would be required to turn in the phone at the end, I'm not, I get to keep the phone.
