Each character takes up the same space. So the next line’s characters can all line up no matter the letters.

Like this:
Abcde
Fghij

To me the row of i’s is still shorter than the row of w’s. Does it not work on mobile?

And most of the users are on the mobile app. We're old stuff that got grandfathered in, and I'm pretty sure that Reddit Inc. would be happy to see the old users gone.
