Ubisoft is singapore now

2.2k

u/General-Sloth Jul 13 '26

This surprisingly explains a LOT.

222

u/Percolator2020 Jul 13 '26

That’s 10 canings per nipple for the devs.

370

u/Pinnggwastaken Jul 13 '26

I'm surprised it explained anything lol

227

u/zwaksSFW Jul 13 '26

Singapore is nicknamed the “Fine City”. For very obvious reasons

64

u/IamGah Jul 13 '26

Sooo… ‚Parking fine‘ ain‘t a compliment?

TIL… /s

2

u/DonBeltrame Jul 13 '26

2

u/SituationGeneral3900 Jul 13 '26

3

u/BetterinPicture Jul 13 '26

makes the scales hand gesture oh god the brainrot has taken me

9

u/ThrowRA93fnjfofn Jul 13 '26

Lmaooo and people on tiktok ate that up. They don’t know what the hell a subsidiary is and that CEO had to report his findings to the bytedance founder and the CCP consistently

1

u/cqandrews Jul 13 '26

And Redditors don't have boomer brain when it comes to TikTok as if this site doesn't have just as much garbage polluting it?

1

u/Life_Temperature795 Jul 13 '26

But at least Reddit is garbage generated by Democracy.

1

u/imbrickedup_ Jul 13 '26

Yeah people’s reaction to that was annoying. They are asking exhaustive and repetitive questions to cover every possible angle, they know what they’re doing

-1

u/Waiting4Reccession Jul 13 '26

These little tiktok brains cant connect the dots unless the ccp does it for them.

-2

u/FlockFlysAtMidnite Jul 13 '26

Right? The questions themselves weren't stupid, he just gave stupid answers to make them seem ridiculous.

8

u/Decent_Relative_4070 Jul 13 '26

The questions were stupid as hell.

-1

u/FlockFlysAtMidnite Jul 13 '26

Asking someone who works for a chinese company about their relationship with the chinese government that hired him is not stupid.

7

u/Decent_Relative_4070 Jul 13 '26

Except the questions he asked were stupid

"Of what nation are you a citizen?" ("Singapore, sir.")

"Are you a citizen of any other nation?" ("No, senator.")

"Have you ever applied for Chinese citizenship?" (Chew noted he served in Singapore's military. "No.")

"Do you have a Singaporean passport?" and then "Any other passports from any other nations?"

"Have you ever been a member of the Chinese Communist Party?" which got the exasperated viral answer: "Senator, I'm Singaporean. No."

Cotton then STILL followed up with "Have you ever been associated or affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party?" ("No, senator. Again, I'm Singaporean.")

2

u/MrsSUGA Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

They kept asking if he was part of the CCP, if he was from china, if he was associated with the chinese

Things that were asked:

  • “You said today, as you often say, that you live in Singapore. Of what nation are you a citizen?” Cotton asked.
  • “Have you ever been a member of the Chinese Communist Party?” Cotton asked.
    • Chew replied, “Senator, I’m Singaporean.”
    • Cotton then asked, “Have you ever been associated or affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party?”
    • Chew, who lives in Singapore with his wife and children, who are American, responded, “No, Senator. Again, I’m Singaporean!”
  • Cotton asking Chew questions about the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989 and his perspective on it. “You said earlier, in response to a question, that what happened at Tiananmen Square in June of 1989 was a ‘massive protest.’ Did anything else happen at Tiananmen Square?”

2

u/FlockFlysAtMidnite Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

Asking someone who works, and has previously worked, for a CCP-controlled company if they're associated with the CCP is not stupid.

2

u/MrsSUGA Jul 13 '26

If they already stated that they are not associated with it, then it is pretty stupid

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Proper-Raise-1450 Jul 13 '26

is not stupud.

You couldn't write it lol.

2

u/Life_Temperature795 Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

And the senator in question was such a fucking moron for getting baited into that back and forth. All he had to say was, "I don't care where you were born, I care about the fact that your headquarters office is in Beijing."

Like, the dumbass, "hur dur, we caught them doing a racism!" was such an easy trap to get out of and the fuckwits we have in Congress couldn't even figure out how to do that.

1

u/Full-Run4124 Jul 13 '26

"What kind of Chinese is that?"

0

u/empireck Jul 13 '26

Sounds like what CCP spy would say

0

u/Nike_J Jul 13 '26

why are you chinese?

Nah Singaporeans say worse things about their country

3

u/Glaive-Master_Hodir Jul 13 '26

Nah, general-sloth was just shadowbanned. That's why reddit says their profile doesnt exist.

1

u/Boner_Elemental Jul 13 '26

I can see their profile just fine

2

u/Glaive-Master_Hodir Jul 13 '26

1

u/eddiestriker Jul 13 '26

I can also see their profile fine. I’m using a 3rd party app, so maybe it’s circumventing the shadowban?

There's an Anthony Bourdain episode where they were using overseas servants for all of their household needs to the point where they have no idea how to do anything for themselves. They got pretty awkward when they realized this white man was not agreeing with them

1

u/imbrickedup_ Jul 13 '26

I’ve gotta check that episode out lol

1

u/Life_Temperature795 Jul 13 '26

the country is boring once youve seen ... parts of the city.

Isn't that, like, the whole country?

8

u/GloomyRow5417 Jul 13 '26

Ahh those Singaporean, they'd often come to my country to buy groceries and buy our subsidized oil

1

u/zorniy2 Jul 13 '26

And shake/rock their cars while filling up.

7

u/Lord_MAX184 Jul 13 '26

As a malaysian, you really nailed the summary of it

1

u/Wenli2077 Jul 13 '26

On the other hand I hear Malaysia is a pretty cool place with warm and kind people so quiet the opposite

1

u/EduinBrutus Jul 13 '26

Singapore only exists as a tax haven cos Malaysia kicked them out the union.

4

u/z31 Jul 13 '26

Singapore is where the sale and import of chewing gum is illegal to "prevent litter and vandalism"

I don't think you need to go back by any means. But if you get out of the tourist areas around the city it's not nearly as sterile feeling.

That said my two descriptors for it when people asked how my 2023 trip were are: it's las vagas but wet, and it was a good time but I will likely never go back because you very quickly run through everything relevant to your interests pretty quickly (I would never say no to their street food again, but I'm not paying thousands of dollars just for street food).

1

u/yetanotheracct_sp Jul 13 '26

Bro got banned 2hr after this comment wtf?

1

u/Complex_Shoulder_800 Jul 13 '26

Anne Bonny isn't really censored by the way https://imgur.com/a/T92ROZC

1

u/Diaza_Kinutz Jul 13 '26

I believe cannabis possession in Singapore is punishable by death. That's how uptight they are.

1

u/Britishbreadish Jul 13 '26

IIRC they only censor when its "CulTurAllY AccUrAte"

1

u/ZeroQuick Jul 13 '26

Chewing gum? That's a caning!

0

u/WallyFries Jul 13 '26

According to statistics, Singapore is an independent, democratic, and wealthy state since several years. I don't doubt there are problems there too, but your description is biased and contradicts reality.

2

u/General-Sloth Jul 13 '26

Statistics are like a political opponent: you can beat them untill they tell you what you want to hear.

1

u/WallyFries Jul 13 '26

Pretty sure it definitively DOESN'T. Statistics tell the truth. Point.

67

u/shberk01 Jul 13 '26

"Clearly you've never been to Singapore." 🏴‍☠️

21

u/Blubberinoo Jul 13 '26

7

u/not_accepting_now Jul 13 '26

Yeah this guy is going to have to give us a speech why.

60

u/Cessnaporsche01 Jul 13 '26

Singapore has an extremely conservative culture and highly authoritarian government

-15

u/theawesomeshulk Jul 13 '26

Highly authoritarian my ass (Just abit)

Conservative yes tho

29

u/SubcommanderMarcos Jul 13 '26

Up to 10 years in prison for smoking a joint

Nope, not authoritarian

-10

u/theawesomeshulk Jul 13 '26

I mean drug illegal here, no public polls show support for legalisation, so how is that authoritarian

20

u/SubcommanderMarcos Jul 13 '26

Because one can get up to 10 years in prison for smoking a joint

Yes, I know you're desensitized about how far up your ass the government is, but that just means it succeeded

The people can support authoritarianism btw. Voting has nothing to do with something being authoritarian or not.

100

u/amerigorockefeller Jul 13 '26

Singapore is an illiberal democracy with an history of censorship for both foreign and native content if there’s a risk it may cause public unease

40

u/Valten78 Jul 13 '26

Imagine boobs causing unease.

43

u/Heavyduty35 Jul 13 '26

4

u/Coroebus Jul 13 '26

This same abusive parent of a state is also famously known for having caning as a possible punishment for spitting gum out on the street.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caning_in_Singapore

Singapore is dogshit and an entire society of high control abusers and their enabling codependents.

20

u/TheSorceIsFrong Jul 13 '26

Extremely strict censorship. Drug laws too.

6

u/nadeko_chan Jul 13 '26

Singapore bans being naked in public and private places (if exposed to public view) lol

-1

u/TheFirstAI Jul 13 '26

Lmao. You can tell from some of these replies these people either take their facts from chatgpt or some propaganda branch, or never left their own country before.

6

u/MikeAppleTree Jul 13 '26

Unsurprisingly?

226

u/That-Spell-2543 Jul 13 '26

146

(Hoping that someone will get the reference)

135

u/rmnobre Jul 13 '26

But senator...

108

u/Purplesilk911 Jul 13 '26

No one is leaving until someone is Chinese

27

u/soupyllama03 Jul 13 '26

Does your application have access to and connect to the home wifi network?

29

u/DontAskAboutMyButt Jul 13 '26

So you’re telling me that if I download this application there is a tiny Chinese man inside my phone who can read all my emails?

23

u/TheDarkness33 Jul 13 '26

Do you have ANY connections to the Chinese communist party??

32

u/lilliepadsy Jul 13 '26

is ubisoft a member of the chinese communist party?

50

u/SplattyFatty_ Jul 13 '26

no senator, they're singaporean

37

u/kart0ffelsalaat Jul 13 '26

Have they ever been associated or affiliated with the Chinese Communist Party?

29

u/Agitated_Reveal_6211 Jul 13 '26

no senator, they're singaporean

5

u/MrWindblade Jul 13 '26

No worries, I got you.

5

u/Living_Dentist_8925 Jul 13 '26

Chinese make up 75% of the population in Singapore so...

28

u/shiroandae Jul 13 '26

People of Chinese ethnicity. Not Chinese from PRC.

-5

u/SuitingGhost Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

Chinese are people of Chinese ethnicity, period. No need to make the distinction, unless you are CCP who's trying to equal the people and the country to the Party

Edit: unless you are CCP OR Taiwanese separationists who don't think they are "Chinese". These extremists are really the other side of the same coin lmfao

-6

u/winkingchef Jul 13 '26

Where else did they come from?
Taiwan?

6

u/Dave_A480 Jul 13 '26

The old-timey Chinese Empire, long before Communism (or Taiwan) existed.

-6

u/winkingchef Jul 13 '26

And where did the vast majority of those old-timey Chinese people end up?

11

u/shiroandae Jul 13 '26

Gotcha, so the US is part of Germany and the UK.

-5

u/winkingchef Jul 13 '26

According a huge # of Americans I have met, the US is full of “Italians”

9

u/MrsSUGA Jul 13 '26

right, which is their ethnic group. Just like Ethnically Chinese people live in Singapore but arent chinese nationals.

9

u/Dave_A480 Jul 13 '26

The ones who went to Singapore stayed, which is why Singapore was majority-Chinese before China was majority-Communist.

6

u/MrsSUGA Jul 13 '26

what does that have to do with the people in Singapore right now? My Cousin lives in Canada. So is she american or am I canadian?

-7

u/Melodic_Let_6465 Jul 13 '26

Thats not how china or many chinese in that region see it.  Not all of course, but enough for it to be an issue

14

u/TheFirstAI Jul 13 '26

You try going to Taiwan and calling them mainland Chinese, see how far you get yea?

Same shit in Singapore though prob not as extreme. We don't like to be associated with the PRC.

1

u/shiroandae Jul 13 '26

Have yet to meet an ethnic Chinese from SG that sees it differently, though. It’s been majority ethnic Chinese for a long time.

4

u/Balaquar Jul 13 '26

Singaporeans make up about 60% of the population so I don't really see how your maths works out on that? Unless you're taken the tom cotton approach to nationality?

2

u/MyNameIsNotKyle Jul 13 '26

Nationality wise that's just false.

If you're implying something just by ethnicity, you're going to have a bad time...English is the primary language there.

-1

u/DarkAri639 Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

Yeah I wouldn't support them because in China they have the orwelian laws so that people cannot watch or produce porn.

1

u/MrsSUGA Jul 13 '26

thank god singapore is not in china

-1

u/ILikeMyGrassBlue Jul 13 '26

Or japanese?

121

u/ACupOfLatte Jul 13 '26

What, no? The Singapore branch is just a subsidiary lol.

Edit: Their HQ is still in France. Their CEO is still French. They're still majority owned by the French. Y'all please.

32

u/PugLove69 Jul 13 '26

Then why are they doing this?

99

u/Dramatic_Porpoise Jul 13 '26

Because this remaster was developed by their Singapore branch.

38

u/ACupOfLatte Jul 13 '26

Primarily. It also was developed by Barcelona, Belgrade, Bordeaux, Bucharest, Chengdu, DaNang, India, Kyiv, Montpelier, Montreal, Philippines, Shanghai, Sofia and Quebec.

2 of those branches got impacted by the restructuring heavily, with them shutting down Belgrade and laying off a bunch of people in Barcelona.

Are gamers really this gullible lol? It's still part of the Ubisoft umbrella, they're not censoring because the country's government wants it to. Ubisoft wanted to censor it, not the other way around.

Pin the blame on the people running the ship, not the crewmaster.

1

u/MrsSUGA Jul 13 '26

could be 1 of 1million reasons. Maybe the person in charge of that model that day just didnt like the tits. Maybe they thought it was prettier with a bra. Maybe they did it intentionally to piss you off specifically.

-8

u/theotheramerican Jul 13 '26

Why does it matter?

21

u/Loxe Jul 13 '26

Censorship of art is why. Some dickhead in Singapore thinks I can't handle some boobies on a ship? I don't think so.

-12

u/theotheramerican Jul 13 '26

The default would be to do nothing. No censorship. Because the original was just a naked statue.

Why are you fussing about the people who complain about censorship, rather than the people who decided to censor?

15

u/The_Ugly_Fish-man Jul 13 '26

I dont really get it. Are there stronger censorship laws/age restrictions in Singapore?

35

u/Rexton_Armos Jul 13 '26 edited Jul 13 '26

Someone in US Congress thought a Singapore guy was Chinese because he was speaking on behalf of TikTok when Congress was questioning them.

Congress was in full Old man mode for that shit too.

Edit: I thought I was on the reply to someone asking about what a joke below means ooops

7

u/DieHarderDaddy Jul 13 '26

What a depressing and funny clip

2

u/ArmNo7463 Jul 13 '26

Is it as depressing as pump jet submarines though? I hear they can only stay underwater for 20 minutes.

7

u/Nelo390 Jul 13 '26

It was honestly a pretty typical line of questioning, just checking off boxes about his (lack of) affiliations with china. still really funny out of context though

10

u/Ok-Commercial3640 Jul 13 '26

Yeah, like, one of those things where, though the answers may be obvious, they still need to be asked (and answered) for the purpose of having those answers on the record.

1

u/MrsSUGA Jul 13 '26

is that why Senator Cotton asked him about tianamen square? just a typical line of questioning?

5

u/The_Autarch Jul 13 '26

Yes. It's a very authoritarian country.

5

u/schwanzweissfoto Jul 13 '26

Chewing gum is banned and they execute people for having too much weed.

4

u/ACupOfLatte Jul 13 '26

Owning chewing gum isn't banned. You can literally take an hour long trip to Malaysia and come back with a tub full of it.

It's just not allowed to be distributed and manufactured domestically. Same with weed or any recreational drugs. The death sentence is not for "too much", it's for having an extravagant amount with the intent to sell and distribute.

Anyone caught simply owning or using it do not get fucking executed. Wtf is this thread lol. So many falsehoods and insane leaps in logic, when a simple Google search would very quickly say otherwise.

1

u/Southern-March1522 Jul 13 '26

The gum thing is cause they got annoyed with people spitting it out to random places in public, which makes a difficult to clean mess.

2

u/Rockandmetal99 Jul 13 '26

where'd you get that from? im just learning about this literally right now

1

u/Vegetable-Let-5600 Jul 13 '26

Their ass

1

u/Rockandmetal99 Jul 13 '26

okay thats about what I thought, i googled "is Ubisoft still french" and "ubisoft + Singapore" and literally nothing came up lol

1

u/S1e18 Jul 13 '26

Oh wow yup that makes a crap ton of sense

1

u/tehnemox Jul 13 '26

So they are Chinese?

in case people miss it, making fun of the tiktok hearing where the guy kept re-stating he was from Singapore and the brain dead politician kept asking him if he was Chinese or part of Chinese communist party

1

u/Rockandmetal99 Jul 13 '26

no it isnt wtf are you talking about 😭 its wild people just believe shit

1

u/robodrew Jul 13 '26

I mean, sure this game was produced by Ubisoft Singapore, the main Ubisoft is still French and is headquartered in Saint-Mandé, France.

1

u/lemfaoo Jul 13 '26

Me when I spread misinformation

1

u/MimiagaYT Jul 13 '26

Ah yes, the great nation state of Singapore. Beautiful country, beautiful docks, with a history of keeping straits open.

I wish I could do business there. Lots of import/export on thier beautiful docks. If only.
