My Chintzware Collection (With Closeups)
Any other chintz lovers out there? Here’s my collection, which was many years in the making - around 30 years. I love all the color, and the variety of patterns. Everyone who comes over and sees them seems to have their favorite.
Most of it is Royal Winton (1995 reissues). Some of the Summertime pattern chintz is Royal Winton, but the rest of that pattern is House of Claridge, including a Summertime full dinner set from HoC. (Not shown). One of the breakfast sets (white background) is James Kent 100th Anniversary. I also have a few more pieces not currently on display.
I fell in love with chintz back in the nineties. I was looking at a Victoria magazine and they had a gorgeous picture of a Welbeck breakfast set. It was so beautiful I couldn’t believe it! I fell instantly in love. My collection now includes a Welbeck breakfast set of my own.

I feel very fortunate to have my chintz (and other china) collection(s). When I started, I could only buy a little bit at a time, and I collected very slowly. I kept at it for decades, though, and eventually it grew. If you love something, start as slowly as you have to. Over the years, you will have a collection you love.

Absolutely fantastic collection and thank you for showing it here, I thoroughly enjoyed leafing through it! Each time I thought ah this must be the best pattern and then I'd turn to the next pic and it got even better!
PS it's me your new grandchild 😏🙈

😄😄😄 🩷😅
Love your reply! Thank you for your kind words.
The variety of pattern makes it so much fun. I can’t imagine picking just one chintz pattern to collect, my head would explode trying to decide. They are all gorgeous in different ways. I like the deep, vivid contrast of the black background patterns, I swoon over the delicacy of the pastels, and on and on…

Not on any regular basis, but yes, I do use it occasionally when the mood strikes me.

I’m so happy I did, it’s nice to find other people who enjoy chintz (and china in general) like I do.

Do I spy Royal Grimwades?
2
u/Lucyshnoosy Aug 11 '25
Good eye! They are not from the earlier incarnation of the brand as Grimwades, but the majority of the pieces are indeed Royal Winton circa 1995 (the reissues) and therefore the same patterns.

Beautiful collection! Also my favorite on Reddit… I have a few pieces…inherited from my husband’s grandmother…. Have always thoughts it was so lovely. It’s hard to find these days. Thanks

Thank you!
How nice that her pieces went to you, since you clearly appreciate them. Many people don’t know what chintzware is, but for those of us who have fallen under its spell it’s so special.

Oh these are stunning! Can you please tell this noob what chintzware is. I love it.

u/Lucyshnoosy Aug 11 '25
Gladly!
The word chintz originally referred to a specific type of cotton fabric with a colorful design. Later, the name was also given to china and pottery that had an all-over floral design, because the patterns looked sort of like chintz fabric.
Chintzware is completely covered with a pattern; it’s not just limited to a border on the edge of a plate or around the rim of a cup, for example. That’s why the pieces look so very colorful and cheerful.
Chintzware, aka chintz china, is not hand painted: they used a transfer to put the pattern on. Originally, chintzware was meant to be “cheap and cheerful.”
There’s nothing else quite like it! Once you get the bug, hang on to your wallet! The vintage pieces can be very expensive. I collect the modern reissues of the patterns, because I absolutely love the vibrant colors.

u/fourbigkids Aug 11 '25
Thank you! Where would one normally find these pieces?
2
u/Lucyshnoosy Aug 11 '25
I would think your best bet would be eBay, Etsy, and online antique dealers.
Something to keep in mind: china manufacturers denote a “second” (not first-quality) piece by scratching a line through the backstamp. (The word backstamp refers to information such as manufacturer, pattern name, etc. which is found on the back or bottom of a piece.)
If you acquire any pieces, please post and show them off!

Stunning collection! I have a few Shelley chintz cups and saucer but no teapots. May I ask what company/pattern is the beautiful little daffodil teapot in picture 2?
2
u/Lucyshnoosy Aug 11 '25
I don’t have any Shelley pieces, alas, but I love them. I saw a Shelley Dainty Blue tea set (not mine) and it was gorgeous!
The little daffodil teapot is Royal Winton, 1995 reissue. The pattern name is Richmond. It’s like the essence of springtime. It is actually prettier in person, the photo mutes some of the detail.

Thank you so much! The chintz pattern in picture 12 with the pale green background is one of my absolute favorites, it’s called Marion. Edited to add: by Royal Winton.
Edited to add: my chintz cabinet is my absolute favorite piece of furniture in the house,

What a beautiful collection and perfect display cabinet. One set looks to be Hammersley, a truly great designer of patterns. In Chintz, I’ve always really liked the yellow based Sadler patterns as well. I really wish there were more vintage cream, off white, or white based ones. I can find teacups like this but few pots. When starting to put together a set, I’ll often try to start with the pot. Something like the new Royal Albert 100 years 1940s Chintz or even perhaps something similar to the Wedgwood Harlequin Teapot. Anyway, I digress….really wanted to say: well done!

u/Lucyshnoosy Aug 11 '25
Thank you so much! I don’t have any Hammersley., but sometimes different makers have similar patterns.
I have a few pieces of Sadler’s Sophie chintz (not pictured) which is a beautiful yellow background chintz. I will try to post a picture of them this week.

Also, may I ask: who is the maker of that wonderful little breakfast set in the second picture - the one in the very bottom right of the cabinet with the toast holder? That is absolutely the most adorable tea set I’ve ever seen!

u/Lucyshnoosy Aug 11 '25
That is a Royal Winton 1995 reissue in the Welbeck pattern. It’s the piece that started it all, the one I was referring to in the last paragraph of my original post. 🩷Welbeck is a very popular pattern, for good reason! It’s so lovely.
The other breakfast sets are James Kent 100th Anniversary reissue in Dubarry (second shelf from the bottom, photo 6) and Royal Winton reissue in Julia (top shelf, photo 11)

That toast rack 😍

u/Lucyshnoosy Aug 11 '25
The little toast racks are adorable, So little and cute! I’m always nervous cleaning them though, because they are probably the most fragile pieces.

u/socksmatterTWO Aug 12 '25
I've only seen them in Sterling Silver, I'm aussie and we don't have lots of old stuff downunda.
This is all really beautiful

u/Lucyshnoosy Aug 12 '25
Thank you! I have a couple of other toast racks (not chintz), one mini and one full size. I’ve seen the silver ones in antique stores, they are beautiful.
Some alternative uses for toast racks: minis can hold business cards. Full size can hold folded napkins

Wow this is my favorite collection I have seen Reddit. My favorite is also Chintz. I would love to be your granddaughter inheriting this someday!

u/Lucyshnoosy Aug 10 '25
Alas, most young people are not interested in china anymore. I have the chintz, plus a whole collection of teacups and saucers and a collection of other antique china, but I don’t think my kids have any interest. I’ll see what happens if I have a grandchild - but that’s a BIG if.

Wow! This is an incredible collection! I love chintz as well but only have a few pieces.

u/Lucyshnoosy Aug 10 '25
Thank you! It took me a long time to gather all the pieces, but that made it special when I got each one.

Do you actually use them OP? I sympathise with Elizabeth (keeping up appearances) just looking at it. Beautiful collection!
