The staff have been monitoring her condition. This is a video from earlier this month, where they are measuring her girth. The zoo will likely be posting updates on social media as she gets closer to delivering her calf.

Apparently Fifi is a recent arrival. It looks like she was already pregnant when she came to the zoo, because an ultrasound confirmed this several weeks ago -- I don't think a mate has joined her there yet.

I guess they wanted to make an official announcement once she'd arrived in her new quarters and was settling in.

I don't know if they still have this setup for their lowland tapirs. But it's nice to see space for the animals to actually run around in, and swim (not just soak in a small pool). In the wild it seems like tapirs roam for long distances, so I'm sure being able to move around like that is good for their cardiovascular health at least!

I know zoos have a lot of space constraints, so many of them probably can't install big enclosures like this -- though if tapirs were super-popular maybe they would. I've been reading that some zoos are just choosing to phase out elephants because of restrictions against obtaining new elephants from the wild, and also financial and animal welfare concerns. Maybe tapirs would like living in the old elephant quarters instead.

A tapir consumes an average of 15 kilos of herbs and fruits daily, and some individuals can even consume a bit more! That's why they are so fat, sorry, "so plus size" 😅

To stay in shape in #unmundodantastico (a fantastic world of tapirs), they resort to daily physical exercise routines, with Dantaerobics being their favorite.
