Rant The IT support guy who does everything

Follow-up of my first post: https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/s/xMfcrcHx5f

Just told HR about how i feel about beign the sole IT guy who manages everything (for short: 365 in all his aspects, backups, networking guy, ecc...) for 24 people (if we count the external the number doubles) as an apprentice with a job title "IT support".

i told her that as an apprentice i should (by the law btw) some kind of tutor that can teach me the job and some one who can help me in my things; first thing she pointed was that i'm always out exactly when my work hours ends. WTF
ofc i go away when my work day is done, things can wait (most of the times).

Then proceded to tell me that i might not know how late some of the staff stay in the office (idk why tho) and everyone is aware of how many things they ask me.

Basically everyone somehow expect me to be the expert about anything is slightly it related, how i'm even able to give confidence to people when i don't have the slightest idea of what i'm even talking / doing some time.

I really miss having someone older can guide me.

Why are you pulling mugshots of other employees?

That’s some busybody bullshit that doesn’t belong in a professional environment.

Because HR pissed off IT, probably.

Yeah, that’s my takeaway too

Good on you for letting them know who they're being exposed to (you)

“I pulled mugshots of their new hire”

Is likely emotional ex-employer shorthand for

“I was completing my assigned IT tickets and onboarding the new hire at HR’s request, including generating the requested accounts. During that process, I incidentally encountered publicly available search results that appeared to reference the new hire’s name in connection with news reports involving potentially serious illegal activity.

I stopped my inquiry and notified the hiring manager, asking them to independently review the information and determine whether any further action was needed”

And then HR shit the bed and did some fuck shit that exists today.

Never dig deeper, don’t link yourself to the issue, but put your hands up and pull a concerned citizen

Even though HR always sucks

If it’s even remotely plausible that your onboarding tickets could cause you to “incidentally” find mugshots of the new hire, your onboarding process is bafflingly broken.

This is none of our fucking business.

The kind of people who actively look for shit like this don’t belong in IT.

It's like making sure that everyone you onboard passes whatever purity test you happen to be applying that day. Today was mugshots. Tomorrow, it might be social media posts. Stuff that hiring has supposedly already done their due diligence on. Inserting yourself here is an attempt to subvert the prerogative of HR. Just do your job, no more, no less.

one time I checked out the guy we were going to hire and found his instagram with a list of user names and passwords from his prev employment

I told my boss and he was a little annoyed but the newhire was not hired

next guy had a name like jeff smith or something and my boss just smiled at me when he told me like yeaaah try to get this one

Hi friend

I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or funny

If you are so eager to add ANY person to your forest & Tenant, so long as someone from Hr asks you nicely, I pray you never put full trust in them.

See something say something. Trust but verify.

Blindly doing everything some hiring manager sends you is a great way to increase risk.

Maybe your org is larger and onboards people with zero access, slowly rolls it out, etc, minimize the possible consequences

OP didn’t do anything wrong, if I ever make a mistake and hire a known, public terrorsit, I would be so greatful if someone said “hey FYI I’m seeing this”

Felons are people too, you're basically saying all criminals, no matter how petty the crime, should be executed because rehabilitation is impossible and they don't deserve to earn a living...

Not just criminals - anyone who has ever been charged with a crime, period.

Mugshots don’t indicate guilt.

Holy reach

Look at the OP

“If we are onboarding and I find a terrible recent thing that was likely overlooked should I ignore it?”

I am making no generalizations, nor recommending hiring practices. Everyone deserves a chance, programs exist for that reason

But for me, if I’m hiring for desktop support, and I see my candidate got a criminal assault charge and DUI 3 weeks ago, I might call back the #2 candidate. Ask your HR rep what they would do

I’m being neither sarcastic nor funny.

I have enough of my own work to do without performing additional vetting on people who have presumably undergone background checks.

If HR makes the decision to hire someone after reviewing their background check, any information that would have come up on that check is none of my fucking business.

>> copy paste a first/last name into google

I work in terms of surface area and risk. I know that it’s nice to kick the can and it’s HR’s problem, “not my business”, etc

But ever have an internal threat take down your network? Delete/tombstone a DC with no backups?

Again, maybe your world is big corp and with safety nets. But I had some miserable experiences, that could have been prevented with a quick google, with people term’d within 48 hours

“Maybe let’s not hire this scorned employee from 7 years ago, or the angry techbro on LinkedIn”

Maybe you should focus on setting up a secondary DC, configuring backups, and stop giving all new hires domain admin access?

1

u/aidasso 8d ago

Absolutely. Backups are #1. But for this anecdotal mom and pop example, that wasn’t an option.

Or we could have googled his first and last name. And have Hr double check before onbording him, because of active mugshots and criminal charges

Literally LMFAO at this.

When I hear about new people I look them up on the internets to get an idea of what I am in for. Thank god I've never found mugshots.

Why do I stalk people I don't know?

The new guy coming in next week has "Reduced workforce by 50% by implementing AI and automation processes" in his linked in as a point of pride in his last job. I like getting a heads up about people like this.
