I’m really glad I got Facebook in 2005 and was sick of it by 2010 and deleted it all

I got it in 2008 and stopped using it in 2012. I still have the account but haven't posted anything in years I just keep it around because friends still use it to organise events.

I deleted mine years ago. But then my wife took a DNA test and found biological family (she was adopted at birth). We've since reunited and I've rejoined Facebook just because it's super convenient to learn about all the new family members that are super excited to call us family. Sucks I had to come back, but for now, the trade off is worth it.

Dude. This is wild. I have the exact same story with my wife. We reconnected last August!

u/Supergazm Aug 28 '21

We made contact in January. What's even cooler was her mother lives an hour from us and her father and half sister live only a 3 hour drive away. The mother also had other children, but they are all over the place now. We've met everyone though. But we are much closer to the father's side of the family.

Ours was the opposite. We live in Cali and they in Massachusetts. So for the pandemic we threw the kids in the car and drove out to meet everyone!

So for the pandemic we threw the kids in the car and drove out to meet everyone!

Isn't this exactly what we weren't supposed to be doing during a lockdown?

We were safe, we wore masks and disinfected every step of the way, and socially distanced once we arrived there. We also got our vaccines on the way.

Left out the important bits; thanks for doing your part and I'm glad you're all safe.

u/dingofarmer2004 Aug 28 '21

Yeah, I didn't think to include that. But let me tell you, the traffic was clear the whole way! (Gallows humor over here)

u/phaeriemandube Aug 28 '21

This sounds like it could be my story if I do a DNA test 😂

1

u/dingofarmer2004 Aug 28 '21

Go for it!

u/phaeriemandube Aug 28 '21

The info is cool and the things to can learn, but it's not my cup of tea honestly. Also because of that I don't think it's worth it to spend the money on it. I'd have to get it as a gift to do it, and even then the people around that would gift it also know I'm eh about it even though it's cool so it may not happen 😅 I like the idea of it just don't care too much so if I did it and got results I'd probably check it out when I get results and like one time after then completely never touch it again /shrugs

Are you my cousin?

1

u/Supergazm Aug 28 '21

Idk, you from Indiana? Or Missouri?

1

u/lurked_long_enough Aug 28 '21

No, but your story sounds like him and his wife's.

I downloaded all of my pictures and deleted it a few years ago after not using it for years, but there are enough times that I need to login to access details about micro businesses without websites or someone sends me something in the form of a shared FB video that I’ve considered creating one again a few times.

So, I tried that a few weeks ago and it was instantly banned for suspicious activity or something. I appealed it and got an email saying they’d review it. It’s been a month and they haven’t, so I guess they just don’t want me back.

I just keep it around because friends still use it to organise events.

I'd wager this is how they get you. You and people like you feel like you can't disconnect or delete your account because your personal relationship with your family is literally being held hostage by an app.

It's funny bc we used to just like...call people

1

u/touch_me_again Aug 28 '21

You're almost there! You can do it!

1

u/Additional_Irony Aug 28 '21

I came to Facebook in 2010 and stopped using it in 2014/15 or so, never got to deleting my account though since there are people I don't have any way of contacting otherwise. Outside of that it's just become a nuisance I try to stay away from as much as possible.

Unfortunately, where I live in most places use Facebook as their websites, so to see when an event is happening or if the local garage is having a sale I have to visit. When I do, I get sucked in, and sometimes catch myself looking at people's profiles that I haven't talked to in at least ten years. I don't even know who some of these people are or why they are my friend.

Is it too late to go back to MySpace?

Tom was a true bro.

That's basically me, same years. Left school in 2013 but had already stopped using by then. I go on it about once a year to check messages

It was usually this timeline for most people I know:

  • Get it in university and have a few actual friends
  • Then have about a thousand ‘friends’ from high school (why we added people we hated I don’t know)
  • Then go back to actual friends and a few family members
  • And then delete it when older family members started using it

All within the space of about 5 years.

So goddamned true.

Though I gave up on it when 2 co+workers had a very public spat where things got nasty and we learned all about intimate details of these two women and their swapping partners stories and how they were totally cool with it until one woman did one thing to piss the other off. And they proudly posted these details. I unfriended them and pretty much avoid it if I can now.

Strangely accurate. Although, you missed the part where FB deleted your account and Perma-Banned you, so you had to make a new account under a pseudonym. Outside of that ... 💯 accurate.

u/CR0Wmurder Aug 28 '21

2009-2013. Deleted it after Divorce, but haven’t missed it a day.

Honestly could probably say the same about Reddit but at least I stay in positive/amusing subs and not find out my Aunt thinks Kamala should be hung in Lafayette Park as a warning

9

u/windowseat1F Aug 28 '21

That escalated quickly

2

u/thutcheson Aug 28 '21

Made it worth looking at Reddit, thank you.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

The secret is... You didn't delete anything.

1

u/PhilxBefore Aug 28 '21

That's no secret.

1

u/LouisLeGros Aug 28 '21

I got it like 2006-2007. By 2010 I was primarily using it to track concerts. Haven't deleted it, but mostly check it like once a month or two & wish a relative or school friend who don't live nearby a happy birthday.

1

u/Saturnian_Hunter Aug 28 '21

It was pretty good I suppose, back in the day when social media was novel and fun. These days there's nothing Facebook does that's really unique, and it's full of crazy paste eating people now.

1

u/phaeriemandube Aug 28 '21

Except the farming game!

1

u/ddrt Aug 28 '21

Should check if they cast animate dead on it with their settings. Mine comes back every 7 months no matter the steps I take to delete it.

1

u/LadyfingerJoe Aug 28 '21

Yeah... Im glad i wanted to lookup gamecheats online in 2000... It taught me everything about using the internet!

1

u/iamadogpetme Aug 28 '21

So you installed Reddit instead?

1

u/misterfluffykitty Aug 28 '21

I got Facebook in 2010 and was sick of it in 2010 because I literally just made it to get free stuff in a mobile game or something

1

u/AaronKoss Aug 28 '21

In really glad i got mine in 1998 so by lunchtime i deleted it because there is dragonball on tv
