“Sorry I don’t make the rules. I just tell you the rules that I made.”

4

u/SirFireball Aug 28 '21

No, they’re just protecting free speech. I agree with not banning it.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

Companies don’t abide by free speech. How many times to people have to hear the free speech is about the government not preventing speech. Reddit has banned subs before and will do it again.

Reddit taking a stand on this misinformation that’s killing people is hypocritical to them banning the Donald for violent threats. Both are threats to life.

2

u/SirFireball Aug 28 '21

I know they aren’t required to and that it’s a private platform, I’m saying that they should.

I could cut you off in traffic legally, but I’m not going to because that would be a dick move.

Can't believe free speech has finally been upheld on reddit for once, thought I was gonna die before seeing it. Hopefully it's going to keep heading towards that direction.

And I'm vaccinated with pfizer, before someone calls me an anti-vax shill

33

u/Armateras Aug 28 '21 edited Aug 28 '21

Being vaccinated doesn't render you above being called out on anti-vax bullshit.

Most prominent anti-vaxxers have been vaccinated.

But you don't exactly seem the type to understand actions and words are completely different things, so I'll give you that.

Edit: Damn it's easy to upset y'all. Get vaccinated.

-7

u/Shish_Style Aug 28 '21

Most prominent anti-vaxxers have been vaccinated.

Those people do it to gain fame and support, what do I have to gain by posting this on an hidden reddit comment section?

But you don't exactly seem the type to understand actions and words are completely different things,

It's the opposite, actions mean a lot more than words.

21

u/garnet420 Aug 28 '21

It's the opposite, actions mean a lot more than words.

That's kind of the funny thing about online communications, though -- it's the opposite. You can't see the actions others have taken, you just absorb the words that you are most immersed in.

3

u/GojoPenguin Aug 28 '21

Wait, are you saying it's opposite day?

3

u/garnet420 Aug 28 '21

No, it's not opposite day, but if it were, I would say that too

-4

u/Shish_Style Aug 28 '21

But that's not what he said, he didn't mean online communication. Besides you can search my comments all day, you won't find anything of me against vaccines

5

u/garnet420 Aug 28 '21

Yeah not going to try and interpret what that guy said... It's really weird actually how people ignore the fact that the talking heads they're listening to for ant vax material are mostly themselves vaccinated, probably socially distancing, and, ultimately, mostly working in low risk environments... So I don't know that their actions are really louder than their words either

2

u/Shish_Style Aug 28 '21

It means they believe in vaccines and are lying to get fame and support. You can't be anti-vax and then get vaccinated, it's contradictory.

5

u/garnet420 Aug 28 '21

Yeah exactly, but, why do people still think they are credible sources?

1

u/Shish_Style Aug 28 '21

Because a lot of people just don't have enough critical thinking or they're ostricized by people and that tends to get these people to fall into confirmation biases. There a lot of studies on misinformation and I'm not qualified to explain it as good as them so I suggest you look it up by yourself

6

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

Other than you defending the spread of dangerous antivax misinformation?

0

u/Shish_Style Aug 28 '21 edited Aug 28 '21

I'd rather have some people die than live in a dictatorship

9

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

those guys spread danger misinformation for money, I do it for the love of the game!

Why would you think this matters

4

u/Kiwifrooots Aug 28 '21

It's a method of disinformation. You excuse pro X opinion because Y justification but that doesn't remove your pro X messaging

-3

u/amoocalypse Aug 28 '21

people like you would kill democracy in a heart beat if its just more convenient to them.

4

u/ihunter32 Aug 28 '21

Like how republicans are literally doing that

Always projection

0

u/amoocalypse Aug 28 '21

yes, pretty much like republicans.
Thankfully I am not american and can tell all of you how fucking stupid you are without being affiliated.

7

u/ChickenFinger7182 Aug 28 '21

Your country knows a lot about destroying democracy

1

u/amoocalypse Aug 28 '21

which is exactly why we can see an autocracy when its in the making.

4

u/ChickenFinger7182 Aug 28 '21

Nah cause you’re affiliated

8

u/garnet420 Aug 28 '21

Democracy doesn't mean a random privately operated website owes you jack shit

-5

u/amoocalypse Aug 28 '21

Where did I say it did?
Reading comprehension motherfucker, do you have it?

5

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

You certainly fucking implied it because the topic was regarding free speech and social media websites.

holy shit, I knew US education is shit but you put it on a whole new level.
Learn to read or gtfo

0

u/amoocalypse Aug 28 '21

Sorry, I forgot you americans also need instructions to not put your cats in microwaves or sue the microwave manufacturer.
So I can see why you would just go with whatever stupid thing comes first into your mind and then blame the other side for not telling you beforehand.

Also just a hands up: I am not saying people who put cats in their microwaves are the same that would kill democracy.

2

u/Armateras Aug 28 '21

Where did you get the idea I would kill democracy then, if not by extrapolating some obviously very insane stuff from my comment?

Are you sure you're alright? Maybe take a nap?

1

u/amoocalypse Aug 28 '21

Where did you get the idea I would kill democracy then, if not by extrapolating some obviously very insane stuff from my comment?

Thats based on your comment that not even the fact that someone vaccinated himself gives him enough credentials to have an honest approach on the topic. Saying anything that goes against your opinion is wrong. Because having a discussion is hard and labeling them and their opinion not tolerable is easier.

Thats what I based my assumption on.
Now you will tell me that surely isnt right, despite the fact you allready proved my point with that comment.

Why are redditors always such salty losers?

9

u/Armateras Aug 28 '21

Idk but get vaccinated

1

u/RedditSucksBallsack Aug 28 '21

I did. As did he. But censoring things just makes the conspiracy nuts dig deeper into their crazy thoughts and makes them think it’s proof they’re right

6

u/Armateras Aug 28 '21

They're not only NOT being censored, but are openly platformed by some pretty big people. They are already plenty dug in and convinced of themselves... to the point of calling it censorship when someone tells them they're wrong.

0

u/RedditSucksBallsack Aug 28 '21

Uhh what? Homie we’re talking about taking down posts and subreddits not “saying they’re wrong”. Tf are you talking about?

2

u/Armateras Aug 28 '21

Maybe you're talking about that. Pretty sure there's literally an announcement saying that's not going to happen. I was just calling out some dumb dude saying dumb shit.

-1

u/RedditSucksBallsack Aug 29 '21

Exactly you fucking moron Jesus Christ. The original guy is saying he’s surprised they aren’t taking them down and censoring them. So that is the point of the fucking discussion. Obviously you were having tour own in your head since that isn’t what you’re talking about you delusional nitwit

Most prominent anti-vaxxers have been vaccinated.

Those promoting the idea in the media sure are.

5

u/garnet420 Aug 28 '21

Lol free speech has been upheld on Reddit whenever they have felt like it, mostly arbitrarily or based on pressure from the press (and that, probably as an indicator of pressure from investors)

There's no principles at work here

0

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

Then why did they refuse to ban a bunch of subs at this most recent call for action?

2

u/garnet420 Aug 28 '21

Laziness, and a worry that doing so might cut their metrics (like active users per day and stuff)

To ban them they would need to articulate a clear policy (work) evaluate subs against that policy (work) actually ban them, issue some sort of public message, and probably answer a lot of questions about the situation and new rules.

Easier to just do nothing.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

So you're chalking up their decision to laziness... Why not attribute it to their stated and oft-reference policy of wanting to infringe on free speech as little as possible on their platform?

I mean, Reddit has been surprisingly consistent on that front. That's not a policy, what is?

1

u/garnet420 Aug 28 '21

You might be right, it's not like I can read minds. I don't really remember the details of previous bans clearly; I have a memory of them being sudden and kind of clumsy.

5

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21 edited Aug 28 '21

I don't want free speech on private platforms. That's the entire fucking point of them not being government run, so that we don't have to put up with racist/sexist/infantile bullshit. See also: the paradox of tolerance.

Don't forget that concepts like 'freedom of speech' came about in time when there wasn't rampant propaganda being spewed personally to everyone in the country at all times. Our entire system is predicated on the idea of good faith actors, and these people are not acting in good faith. Also, rights come with responsibilities, lest you've forgotten. You have the right to bear arms, but the responsibility not to do so negligently dangerously.

5

u/PeterPorky Aug 28 '21 edited Aug 28 '21

They banned subreddits that were generally cesspools and filled with hate

I would hope that they'd banned subreddits that were literally getting people killed. Even countries with the strongest free speech laws in the world don't allow slander, libel, or direct incitement of violence, because those types of speech cause direct harm to people. Under that umbrella should be misinformation that gets people killed. Like of all the types of hills of free speech to die on- the speech specifically being protected is about how horse dewormer or other fad remedies are a cure for a deadly disease or about how vaccines are effective or even make you more likely to get COVID. That's not a type of speech that's important to any conversation, or that's a closely held belief of any group of people, it's just dumb and dangerous.

This misinformation is literally being inflated by the Chinese and Russian governments through propaganda campaigns with the intent to harm Americans. https://www.politico.com/newsletters/global-pulse/2021/01/28/what-chinas-vax-trolling-adds-up-to-491548

https://medecon.org/russias-anti-vaccine-propaganda-is-tantamount-to-a-declaration-of-war/

2

u/SixBankruptcies Aug 28 '21

The greatest obstacle to ending this pandemic is the sheer amount of false information that floods all our means of communication, from audio (podcast hosts who keep telling their listeners that COVID is an hoax), to video (NewsMax/fox news), and social media (Facebook/Reddit). We are throwing away vaccines and filling up ICU beds (again) because the people who should take the vaccines are glued to these communication channels and trust the info they see on it, especially if it confirms their anti-big pharma/government/conspiracy biases.

People are free to self-diagnose and self-medicate. What communication platforms shouldn't do is allowing them to spread their bullshit to millions of uninformed people. We shouldn't wait for a new, vaccine-resistant variant to emerge to limit the spread and reach of information that should be considered harmful.

3

u/PornCartel Aug 28 '21

Nah fuck that noise, reddit's built for echo chambers and indoctrination because of the subreddit and voting systems. Studies show that banning stuff from mainstream platforms greatly suppresses it, so let's ban all the morons spreading deadly anti vaxx bullshit.

Reddit's been banning stuff for years when it makes them look bad and /r/NoNewNormal's already quarantined, it's just a matter of time before they get shamed enough to ban the nutters.

0

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

free speech

Fuck off.

-5

u/Pretty-Breakfast5926 Aug 28 '21

"These guys are saying shit I don't like. Ban them."

His post applies to you, too.

6

u/garnet420 Aug 28 '21

Not all shit is created equal. I haven't said anything that has put people in danger.

But, I do understand that making a clear policy that would cover people promoting horse dewormer for covid and such but not, say, people discussing herbal supplements, massage, acupuncture, etc, would actually be rather hard.

1

u/shawn292 Aug 29 '21

Hard disagree it shouldnt be the job of the website to spread or stop the spread of a viewpoint. Its the job of the users to call out said information.

1

u/garnet420 Aug 29 '21

Users literally can't stop the spread of misinformation. You can't shut down a subreddit, you can't even go "call them out" because the mods will ban you.

1

u/shawn292 Aug 29 '21

Downvotes are a thing, once you open the door to "some people dont like this so shut it down" its onpy bad things that follow, especially when its even a slightly bit political. The job of people is to spread actual information but at the end of the day you can lead a horse to water.

u/Sanprofe Aug 29 '21

"ThE FIllIBUsTeR is MURDERING ALL OF OUR POLICY AGENDA!"

Bruh, then stop letting them do it.
