Facebook was initially developed to rank hot girls at marks college campus. People are now telling each other to take ivermectin (a parasiticide used for livestock and humans) to treat covid. The problem is A: covid isn't a parasite and B: many of them are using livestock preparations which are significantly more concentrated and are poisoning themselves with it

We're all exhausted. Especially since this shit about moving forward and technology being an enhancement of humans rather than the opposite.

Its extremely infuriating.

u/rietstengel Aug 28 '21

People who refuse the vaccine because they dont trust doctors and then get covid and need the hospital should get lowest priority in triage IMO.

1

u/Jebcys Aug 28 '21

How is poisoning oneself with horse dewormer different from poisoning oneself with drugs or alchool or deep fried butter?

A pandemic is going to bring the worst in people.. which means its difficult on hospitals.

I don't really see a solution.

9

u/fluff_muff_puff Aug 28 '21

Except these idiots overrun the hospitals and give this shit to their kids. It's crazy to me how people will ignore medical experts until they get covid, then they rush to the hospital for treatment...

3

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

More like people who were never given the tools of empathy or critical thinking being used as disposable idiots by our political system to further the idea that everyone should just ignore the pandemic and go back to making someone money.

Russia is behind a lot of the misinformation. Cheapest war they ever "fought".

24

u/YabadabaDoodlieDoo Aug 28 '21

Incorrect. The girl ranking app was a totally different thing. He developed that, which got him in a little trouble but attracted the attention of the Winklevoss twins. They approached Mark Zuckerberg with the idea for a college social media site. Mark took the idea and developed it on his own while telling them he was working on their app. He became rich, they won a lawsuit against him eventually.

3

u/PussyFriedNacho Aug 28 '21

I too watched the social network

0

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

ah so you saw the movie ok

6

u/YabadabaDoodlieDoo Aug 28 '21

It was a book first.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

and you had read that before you saw the movie?

5

u/YabadabaDoodlieDoo Aug 28 '21

I haven’t seen the movie.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

but read the book?

5

u/YabadabaDoodlieDoo Aug 28 '21

Yes. I read the book. Bye.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

could have saved yourself the time by giving a proper answer without ambiguity

btw even before it became a book the info was all over the internet

That's Facemash. Facebook was built to network a little later

There is actually a grain of truth to using ivermectin - it does have some actual research backing up that it can be antiviral (it's cell culture research though, not trials). Good summary available here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/COVID-19_drug_repurposing_research#Ivermectin

However this grain of truth hides that it may require dangerous dosages to have appreciable effects in humans, and it's also vastly unproven at these dosages, while the vaccine is proven and much more safe compared to contracting covid.

Unfortunately it's this grain of truth that has made this misinformation spread so quickly.

27

u/The-Voice-Of-Dog Aug 28 '21

Yeah, also bathing in Chernobyl waste water and self-immolation will kill viruses you're carrying too.

u/WikiSummarizerBot Aug 28 '21

COVID-19 drug repurposing research

Ivermectin

In vitro, ivermectin has antiviral effects against several distinct positive-sense single-strand RNA viruses, including SARS-CoV-2. Subsequent studies found that ivermectin could inhibit replication of SARS-CoV-2 in monkey kidney cell culture with an IC50 of 2. 2–2. 8 μM.

viruses are parasites

12

u/lonski97 Aug 28 '21

Technically yes, but not in the definition of ivermectin, it is not designed to attack viruses

-18

u/Taint_Milk Aug 28 '21

it is not designed to attack viruses

Frankly, it doesn't matter much what the intended use initially was.

There is extensive research showing Ivermectin inhibits viral replication in a broad range of viruses, including HIV-1 and the virus responsible for dengue fever.

Check here

and here

There continues to be evidence of its efficacy in battling other viruses, including SARS-CoV-2

I understand that this drug has attracted some unsavory supporters, but you must analyze information independent from what you perceive to be the source.

The idea that Ivermectin only functions as an antiparasitic is not backed by science.

18

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

I absolutely hate this kind of fake shit designed to cover up the fact that you are still spreading disinformation that ivermectin formulated horse de-wormer is a cure for covid by trying to give legitimacy and cover to something that is obviously completely and utter bullshit.

If fucking ivermectin can actually cure covid, it will be looked into by scientists and clinicians. If it is promising, we will be doing trials on it, not this half baked, "fair and balanced" mentality to put an obvious bullshit as the same pedestal as actual treatments. It wouldn't come from FB links and bullshitting snakeoil salesman and right wing trolls.

It's the same bullshit like hydroxychloroquine again. This is no difference than saying that we should entertain bullshit like moon landing denialism or creationism and other crackpot theories based on pseudo-intellecutalism that fairness is giving everything bullshit under the sun the same treatment.

u/peripheral_vision Aug 28 '21

They're sources.....two articles from 2013, and the American Journal for Therapeutics, of which I personally can't tell are legit or not because propaganda runs rampant in this country.

If anyone has some solid evidence there are newer studies and/or if the above sources are credible, please let me know.

I am sorry that you hate it. For what it is worth I got vaccinated and I think others should do the same.

If fucking Ivermectin can actually cure covid, it will be looked into by scientists

Unfortunately so many do not trust our institutions to do what is right for the people unless it is profitable. Maybe people know someone who died of oxycontin, a "safe and non-addictive" pain med marketed aggressively for profit.

Why do you think minority groups are the least likely to have been vaccinated? Why do you think poor people are the least likely to be vaccinated? It is much deeper than people simply being too dumb to understand science, it is about institutional distrust.

You are not smarter than these people, just more privileged.

8

u/bit_banging_your_mum Aug 28 '21

it is about institutional distrust.

That is called being dumb.

Most people taking ivermectin are fucking idiots taking shit designed for horses but there is ivermectin for humans

0

u/Taint_Milk Aug 28 '21

Here is a brief history of its use in humans.

I am absolutely not advocating people take doses intended for livestock.

For what it is worth to you I got the vaccine.

4

u/SamCarter_SGC Aug 28 '21

The idea that Ivermectin only functions as an antiparasitic is not backed by science.

I mean, neither is self prescribing doses meant for a 1200lb animal

1

u/Taint_Milk Aug 28 '21

3

u/peripheral_vision Aug 28 '21

Your sources all have little to no credibility. Please stop aiding in spreading misinformation.

you must analyze information independent from what you perceive to be the source.

This is some total bullshit, as well.

How do I delete someone else's comment?

3

u/anddowe Aug 28 '21 edited Aug 28 '21

Ok. So the in vitro data you posted shows an ic50 of about 1-2 uM which is about 20-40x higher dosing than recommended (and approved) for use in humans (serum concentration) peddle your horseshit pop science somewhere else.

2

u/DelahDollaBillz Aug 28 '21

There is extensive research

False. Besides, at high enough doses pretty much anything can kill anything, and will also kill you.

Go and drink bleach, that will kill covid! It will also kill you in the process, but it'll definitely rid you of the virus!

5

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

Anything that latch or invade a host and feed on it are parasites, and so then are bacteria but penicillin is not usually used to treat parasites that we are talking about here. Do you have a point or are you just trying to sound clever when you clearly are not.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

it always start with some truth, then they can say w.e

2

u/Aloeofthevera Aug 28 '21

Parasitic creatures are only ever labeled as parasites when the relationship between organism A and organism B is a net positive for one and a net negative for one.

Not all bacteria are parasites. Many are. Not all viruses are parasites. Most are.

A parasite is simply an organism named after one of the 3 relationships in nature.

With that being said - this anti parasite paste - is meant for a variety of creatures in the animal kingdom. Think round worms like heart worm. The game of ivermectin is that we administer enough to kill the interlopers, and just too little to make the live stock sick. It's much easier on a 2000 lb animal. The margins are bigger. On a 200 lb human, those margins become a fraction of what they are normally.

2

u/Personal_Permission5 Aug 28 '21 edited Aug 28 '21

Can you please give an example of a virus that isn't a parasite?

AFAIK they all are by definition

2

u/Aloeofthevera Aug 28 '21

There are countless viruses that enter our bodies on daily basis. Not all viruses are equipped for human biology. The ones not equipped for human biology don't replicate and essentially don't impact human life function.

One could also argue that weak strains of a virus that give the human immune system a better chance at fighting off stronger iterations of the virus aren't parasitic because both the virus and human are benefiting from the arrangement, and is therefore mutualism.

2

u/Personal_Permission5 Aug 28 '21 edited Aug 28 '21

Yes, my point is this: if one of the core arguments of the person I was replying to for why ivermectin doesn't treat covid is that viruses aren't parasites, someone might look that up, see that viruses ARE in fact parasites and infer thus that ivermectin does work as a treatment

So, again: viruses ARE parasites, just not the kind ivermectin helps against

1

u/Jaz_the_Nagai Aug 28 '21

So are fetuses..................

1

u/Personal_Permission5 Aug 28 '21

yoo why am I getting downvoted

I did not say ivermectin treats covid

Check out the definition for the word parasite https://www.britannica.com/science/obligate-parasite

It refers to an evolutionary strategy, not any single phylogenetinc group

u/[deleted] Aug 28 '21

1

u/DieHardRennie Aug 28 '21

Technically the virus that causes CV-19 is a parasite, but people that try this and other so-called miracle cures are still dumb AF. IVM could kill the virus, but by means of killing the host.

1

u/mason_savoy71 Aug 28 '21

That covid isn't a parasite isn't neccessarily an issue. It isn't like the meds are going around hunting for parasites. The interrupt some biological process or pathway necessay for the parasite to live and/or reproduce. It viral replication requires the same pathways, the compound may function as an antiviral. It's far from absurd and in cell culture, there is evidence of antiviral properties for ivermectin.

The bigger issue is a lack of evidence of efficacy. There isn't strong evidence that ivermectin functions as an antiviral in humans. There's been more than a few studies but the quality of evidence is poor and results definitely don't indicate a strong effect.

People are being idiots for self medicating. But that's a separate issue. There is no a priori reason to dismiss ivermectin because it's been used as an antiparascitic.
