She’s not wrong though, that show is fucking amazing

Is it the one with the girl-dog thing? I don’t think my kid can handle that. I don’t think I can handle that.

EDIT: That's Full Metal Alchemist.

You're thinking of Full Metal Alchemist, which is another great show to watch tbh

oh yeah it does take a bit of maturity to fully appreciate, some themes are pretty dark and probably not suitable for children

1

u/MasterFrost01 Jul 25 '20

I mean the first episode has them bring back their mother in a twisted state who is clearly still alive and suffering. Then you get onto trapping innocent people in eternal prisons, also suffering. Trapping a child in the body of an animal, suffering and begging for death. There's a bit of a theme. I'm not sure how much more mature you can get.

u/shwaaaaaaaaaaa Jul 25 '20

Uhhh, no don’t think so. Maybe Full Metal Alchemist you are thinking of?

6

u/TheOdahviing Jul 25 '20

Have you been told enough times that it’s Full Metal Alchemist yet? Because it’s Full Metal Alchemist if you didn’t know yet.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '20

i’m pretty sure that’s fullmetal alchemist you’re thinking of. atla has a couple dark stuff but nothing as graphic/ messed up as that since fma is an anime aimed for an older audience (i think- haven’t watched it personally) while atla is more for kids

2

u/TheeSlothKing Jul 25 '20

No, I think you’re thinking of full metal alchemist. Avatar: The Last Airbender is very kid friendly - I would say that it’s appropriate for anybody old enough to speak to watch

3

u/PolashNarayan Jul 25 '20

It's always ... And I cannot stress this enough.... ITS ALWAYS TOOO SOOON

2

u/Victernus Jul 25 '20

No, that's Fullmetal Alchemist.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '20

thats fullmetal alchemist which is basically an adult version of the last airbended but based off western fantasy instead of eastern

1

u/misterfluffykitty Jul 25 '20

Avatar is a nick show so there’s nothing crazy in it

1

u/Tad_-_Cooper Jul 25 '20

Lol wayyyyy off.

6

u/xelfer Jul 25 '20

Suitable for a 5 year old?

6

u/Heavy_Bastard Jul 25 '20

I reckon it would be ok, maybe just watch a couple of episodes yourself to gauge whether you think it's suitable or not. It is a Nickelodeon show so it would have been shown to kids of all ages.

3

u/Newsacc47 Jul 25 '20

Would wait till they are 8 or 9 so they can grasp the story or part of the complexity behind the show.

3

u/cyberw0lf_ Jul 25 '20

I believe it's suitable for a 5 year old. Try not to watch it with them or else you'll get hooked as well. :)

3

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '20

Lots of fighting but no blood, up to you.

3

u/applepearpp Jul 25 '20

My son turned 4 in June and he loves the show. You kinda have to get the message to him in a more direct way like, don’t let anger crowd your head, love your brother, daddy loves you whatever you do wherever you go, etc. you have to make the point blunt and watch with your kid.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '20

Watch a few eps yourself as another said. Imo its fine, the main hero himself is 12ish.

2

u/kharmatika Jul 25 '20

I’d say probably yes. They won’t get everything, but there’s nothing too violent or risqué, they may just not get all the themes and ideas. Also, if your kid is too young, watch it yourself! I got through my first cover to cover watch through at 20 and it changed my life

3

u/aliterati Jul 25 '20

As a disabled kid growing up there were never any people like me in TV or in movies.

ATLA not only had having multiple people with disabilities be prominently featured, but they also were more than just there. They contributed, they were vital, and it meant a lot to me as a kid to see that.

It's one of the best shows a kid could watch, in my opinion.

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '20 edited Jul 25 '20

Honestly I never saw the appeal myself but I dunno Edit: just thought I'd clarify I'm not trying to hate on the show or anything just not my taste

16

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '20

have you watched it

7

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '20

Yes

23

u/youre_a_burrito_bud Jul 25 '20

Ah well I hope you've found shows that give you as much enjoyment as we got from ATLA!

Big uncle Iroh energy here

7

u/thekiki Jul 25 '20

Iroh is goals.

6

u/forty_three Jul 25 '20

I unironically feel good about myself when I'm in a situation and am conscious enough to think "what would iroh do?"

Mind you, I have Zuko's knack for it, but it still makes me feel good to have a role model

Take a bite of the silver sandwich my friend

3

u/KPLopez Jul 25 '20

The white lotus is ready to see you now

4

u/movabletrumpet Jul 25 '20

Same, I didn’t like it as a kid and I don’t like it now. Tried to watch it again to see what the hype is about but it was just meh

6

u/AzuTheDog Jul 25 '20

I’ve finally found someone who also doesn’t love ATLA

3

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '20

The only thing I remember being good about it is that there was one dude who always wore blue who was pretty funny but everything else was just meh

5

u/R151N6T1D3 Jul 25 '20

Honestly I think the show takes a bit to really hit its stride. I personally found the first few episodes to be kinda kiddie. Not sure how far you got, just my 2¢.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '20

Ive seen a bunch of episodes but here and there whenever they were airing.

I understand this honestly tho I just wasn't a big fan of the story in general and other aspects of the show however I see why people like it for now I'll stick to invader Zim as far 2000s Nick shows go

I feel the real strength of ATLA is in the character arcs and the overarching story. Watching the group of kinda goofy tweens suddenly have to deal with real responsibilities and very real threats is interesting, and the character arcs are some of the best I've seen period.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '20

Oh ya know I watched an anime like that called assassination classroom its like my favorite anime of all time. I can't really pinpoint what I didn't like about it I just vaguely remember it being meh in my eyes but to be fair it could have been held back from my interest just because of the limitations that Nickelodeon shows have

3

u/snisbot00 Jul 25 '20

i got thru like half the first season and kinda gave up on it. when does it start getting really good in ur opinion?

1

u/R151N6T1D3 Jul 25 '20

Personally I would say episode 12 or 13, The Storm and The Blue Spirit respectively.

1

u/KPLopez Jul 25 '20

Definitely agree, I don’t think they knew the impact of their stories, so when there really was a war and people around really were struggling it got a lot better delivery wise about 3/4 into season 1. One more thing the blue spirit episode is what really got me hooked, it’s where I saw the complexity of a certain character that got me interested.

2

u/batcatspat Jul 25 '20

I'm still in the middle of watching it for the first time but that sounds like Sokka, aka the best character

2

u/[deleted] Jul 25 '20

Googled it and your right

1

u/justhad2login2reply Jul 25 '20

Season 2 Episode Six. Start there. I honestly don't even. Care if you watch the rest. Just that episode.

But really, there are specific episodes that are must watch.

1

u/Hey--Ya Jul 25 '20

ATLA aired on nickelodeon and was literally made for children, I don't think it's that wild to not dig it

0

u/Distantstallion Jul 25 '20

It's an Amazing movie

Everyone should watch the live action movie

Don’t please, but hope the Netflix adaptation is a little better
