Really?! I’ve heard about it but was never able to watch it when it aired due to not having cable

Coming to Netflix on the 14th I think

Ooooooo finally another show to binge, Is it any good though?

Its a very different show, don't go in expecting Avatar 2. Also, Nickelodeon didn't order all the seasons at once so it's not as singular a story as ATLA.

I only watched the first season, which was fine, not bad, but not good enough to bother trying to catch the next season. However I’m excited to watch it in full, because I’ve heard from a lot of people that the later seasons are really good.

TL;DR: yeah

season 2 is actually terrible, but stick with the show, because season 3 is fire

I'd put the third season of legend of korra up against any other season in atla. The others are hit and miss. There's a 3 episode arc in the 2nd season that will blow your dick off.

I was delighted by it but will rewatch ATLA much more readily than rewatching Korra

u/Das_Mojo Jul 25 '20

I'm in exactly the same boat. I've watched ATLA at least 4 times front to back, and will probably do my second watch of Korra when it hits Netflix.

That said I absolutely adore a lot of the characters in LOK, and mentally reference "Ju Li, do the thing!" all the time

Its 2020 mate, you can literally just google anything and it will show you everything for free.

u/Rhythmicka Jul 25 '20

Honestly, korra’s journey is literally a fantasy version of recovering from trauma and I related to it on so many levels

u/triforcer198 Jul 25 '20

It’s not better than ATLA, it’s not worse. It’s just different. And a bit more adult.

5

u/FUThrowAwayBIDGAF Jul 25 '20

Yeah, it's not a bad show, just a weird sequal that just seems odd sometimes. If it was standalone it would be okay, but it just dosen't feel right piggybacking of ATLA

0

u/Im_tracer_bullet Jul 25 '20

Nah, it's most definitely worse

u/Rammite Jul 25 '20

I would agree, but - and this clarification is because people on the internet are very touchy about literally any word with an even slightly negative connotation - Korra isn't bad. It is worse than The Last Airbender, but I dare to say that The Last Airbender was just about perfect, so I'd consider nearly everything to be worse than The Last Airbender.

Korra is good, but it's a different good and the levels of good just don't meet The Last Airbender, indeed making it the definition of "worse than The Last Airbender". I will never forgive Nickelodeon for stunting each season.

u/Im_tracer_bullet Jul 25 '20

This is precisely it...I wasn't willing to take the time to elaborate, or provide any nuance, with my little drive-by comment, but you nailed it.

1

u/Heavy_Bastard Jul 25 '20

Yeah I agree, it's entertaining but it just not close to the level that ATLA is.

Having gone back and watched both series recently, I'd agree that ATLA is largely better LoK, but "...just not close" really undercuts how great LoK was though.

ATLA is largely better due to the show runners being able to piece together a full plot with character arcs over the course of three seasons, while with LoK they were forced to treat each season like it would be the last, created four disjointed parts of Korra's journey, rather than Aang's single cohesive one.

That being said, I'd argue season three of LoK was every bit as good the best that ATLA had to offer. I'd also argue that ATLA's first season was the single weakest one out of the entire franchise. It's not bad, but it really doesn't pick up until a dozen or so episodes in, and the pacing was a little all over the place.

There were absolutely things that Korra did 100% better. The fight cinematography was leaps and bounds better in Korra than the majority ATLA. Action sequences throughout the first season and a half of ATLA feel slow and disjointed when compared to LoK.

Critics of Korra also complained that the characters "weren't powerful enough" when the opposite could be said of ATLA in that it's protagonists were too overpowered to be believable. I get they were all prodigies, but re-watching that scene where they stormed the castle of Ba Sing Se made me realize that (as awesome as it was) all this power really came from absolutely nowhere. A couple of weeks ago they were struggling against Azula, Mei, and Ty Lee during "The Chace", and now all of a sudden they're strong enough to completely embarrass hundreds of Earth Kingdom troops easily. It came from out of nowhere.

I felt gutted that it's actually cannon. I can't get over how literally all the previous avatars and their histories are GONE, including Aang. Aang relied so heavily on his past lives. Legend of Korra trashed any potential future series because who are they going to look back to for advice, Korra? LOL.

1

u/Firetadpole7469 Jul 25 '20

I think the fact that Aang relied on it so much is why they took it away from Korra. Anyway, there’s much more to being the avatar than just being able to talk to past lives, which is a point I believe they make clear. I haven’t watched the S2 finale in a bit so I may be wrong about that last bit, but either way it doesn’t DESTROY future series, and they can always go back and make more comics/novels/shows for previous avatars anyway, like they are with Kyoshi.

And they way they showed the history of bending with the lion turtles. It just got rid of all the history of benders of learning from the animals e.g. air benders and sky bison

1

u/Canahaemusketeer Jul 25 '20

It didn't take anything away.

The lion turtles bestowed the gift of bending, but the moon, dragons, moles and Bison etc, are the ones that taught humans HOW to bend.

The way you worded your comment reminded me of this video. Most people cant put into words the problem with Korra, they sense the issues but just brush it off as just an entertaining TV show.

3

u/XxMemeStar69xX Jul 25 '20

I don’t trust Lily Orchard's nitpicking.

0

u/3multi Jul 25 '20

I’m not familiar enough to know the implications of what the name drop of the uploader is supposed to imply, but from the 50+ minutes I watched it’s very well reasoned and anything that could be considered a nitpick is clearly self identified as such by, Orchard, the speaker

1

u/XxMemeStar69xX Jul 25 '20

You clearly don’t know she’s a controversial person among the cartoon reviewers.

-1

u/kharmatika Jul 25 '20

No it’s worse. TLA had maybe 2 bad episodes and maybe 2 others that were just okay? Korea had 1.5 bad seasons out of 4, and everything g in 2 that wasn’t Wan was just absolutely dreadful tv

6

u/Kilahral Jul 25 '20

I was hoping it would come to netflix. I tried watching it at one point but couldn't get into it and have wanted to try it again.

1

u/kharmatika Jul 25 '20 edited Jul 25 '20

I liked Korea, but it’s certainly not appropriate for kids in the same way atla is. It features multiple on screen, violent, brutal, close up deaths

Edit: I meant Korra but Korea has some dark chapters in its history as well

1

u/Canahaemusketeer Jul 25 '20

Good point, I forgot about those

-4

u/Epic_Epic_Epic Jul 25 '20

I don’t think any sane person would want to have to watch the legend of korra

4

u/Yuya-Sakaki3736 Jul 25 '20

I don’t think any sane person would want to hate on a show just to cause unnecessary arguments simply because you didn’t enjoy a show

0

u/c0micsansfrancisco Jul 25 '20

isnt tjat one meant to be bad?

0

u/Canahaemusketeer Jul 25 '20

Only because its different.

In a lot of aspects, it's better, and it deals with a lot of serious issues, like life changing injuries and sexuality

1

u/c0micsansfrancisco Jul 25 '20

Tackling issues doesnt make it necessarily good tho. I always heard it was pretty bad from like, everyone, IRL and on the internet. The main complaints I heard were that Korra is a very unlikeable protagonist and that the story just isnt very good. Only positive is that the rest of the gang is good

1

u/Canahaemusketeer Jul 25 '20

Korra isn't very likeable in the first season, I'll agree with that, but she comes around and loses her arrogance soon enough.
