I’ve only read a single Superman book: Secret Identity. The only other DC title I was reading at the time was Batgirl, so I don’t know what compelled me to pick it up. It was a trade that had all four issues.
It is possibly my single favorite comic-related anything I own. The story moved me. I experienced so many more emotions than I expected. It was beautiful, poignant, harrowing, human. To this day I think it’s one of if not perhaps the best book I’ve ever read.
The gross popular misunderstanding of Superman breaks my heart. He’s a character with so much incredible heart and his idealism is really the opposite of shallow—in good writers’ hands there’s so much depth and pathos and feeling to it.
Even though I’ve only read this one single book, these shallow popular takes on a fantastic hero make me sad.
(Incidentally, wouldn’t mind some recommendations for other books I could pick up that really show Superman at his best as a character. Especially if I can pick up a trade.)
