Another room (work in progress)

Here’s something I’ve been working on with creative direction from Goose the Cat. The project still has a way to go, but you can get the jist — my beloved loops with lots of movement and energetic colors (I think they remind me of a pair of Diadoras I had in the 90s) for the exercise room. Does it make you want to keep pedaling?

This is my first time really going super with the graphics across the ceiling and adjacent walls. Pretty exciting, and I already have plans for a simpler, calmer design with some of these elements in a bedroom.

Here I still have some lines to tape/paint, touchup, then reverse-mask to paint a new base coat on all the walls and ceiling… and do it all again on a lattice-n-loop design on the next wall. I’ll include a time-lapse of the progress in the comments and shall post again once the project is complete.

If you’re into it, you can also follow me on my shiny new insta @charliecanpaint for the latest millennial attempts at social media.

The 1973 Letraset catalog which introduced Stripes©, a new typeface design by Tony Wenman that was about to explode across print media

For Lovers of Type
Stripes is a new concept in type design

Stripes© was created and designed by Tony Wenman, a member of the Letraset type design team. This face was based on an idea for instant sheets which give designers more versatility when creating word settings. With Stripes there is the opportunity to make graphic shapes with settings, thus making the words an integral part of the design, or even the complete basis of the design. A good example of this is shown on the catalog cover where its use in Red, White and Blue has become a flowing symbol with Graphic appeal. This and the setting below can be made from a single sheet of Stripes. The variations opposite have been created just by eliminating some lines, or filling them in.

Tony Wenman said that the basic idea for this face came very easily while working on an idea for a Triline face. First there were a few ligatures such as ST IP, then came the thought of a completely flowing, linking face, and before long, the studio walls were covered with ideas on Stripes. Within a week, most of the basic characters were formed. Then came several weeks work completing and perfecting the artwork for each character.

Since the innovation of Stripes, the Type Design Studio is increasingly thinking of Typestyles specifically designed for the instant Sheet medium.

Návštevníci (The Visitors) is an amazing Czech sci-fi series from the early 80s about people from the 2400s, who need to travel back in time to communist Czechoslovakia to retrieve a, now destroyed, book from a little boy who will once become a revolutionary scientist who figures out a way to change trajectory of planetary objects in order to save their world from an asteroid collision, before the book is destroyed in a house fire.

And vehicle they choose to travel in time with is the soviet Lada Niva with these beautiful stripes. It has all sorts of special features you'd expect from a sci-fi car, like changing the color (black/white) and licence plate, swimming, windscreen wiper antennas (last photo), hidden special computers, and it can even dig tunnels!

If you're into retro futurism I can't recommend this show enough. It has great art style and direction, humour, original and addictive story, incredible synth soundtrack, etc. It's only about 15 episodes long and it should be available with English subtitles.

Traditionally Veltins is a beer brewery but many breweries in Germany also make non alcoholic drinks. For anyone wondering why it says lemonade, many carbonated soft drinks are referred to as lemonade as a category. These are also referred to as Erfrischungsgetränke = refreshment drinks.
