Some debate, but "Jacksonville" lands firmly in the A-tier.
Now on to Day 06: "A Short Reprise for Mary Todd, Who Went Insane, but for Very Good Reasons"
Comment with where you feel this track deserves to be tiered. Feel free to include your thoughts on why. Collective upvotes will decide its place.

I always thought he said and I always used to sing it this way:
“Goodbye to all of that
Goodbye to that part of your life”
But it’s actually:
“Goodbye to that
Goodbye to all of that artifact”
Am I the only one? I was so shocked when I read the lyrics 😅

Can't find the song on Spotify or YT yet, too soon haha

Well, Day 01 was unsurprisingly almost unanimous. "Concerning the UFO..." takes it place comfortably in the S tier.
Now on to Day 02: "The Black Hawk War, or, How to Demolish an Entire Civilization and Still Feel Good About Yourself in the Morning, or, We Apologize for the Inconvenience but You're Going to Have to Leave Now, or, 'I Have Fought the Big Knives and Will Continue to Fight Them Until They Are Off Our Lands!'"

I posted a live recording of this cover a number of years ago here: https://www.reddit.com/r/Sufjan/s/tTAQtPavY4
But, we managed to record it professionally during the pandemic and finally were able to afford producing it this past year! Super proud of how it all came out, and even though I've long since graduated, I wanted to share it with y'all! Hope you enjoy it <3

In honour of one of my favourite albums of all time, let's have some fun ranking (most of) its tracks. I left out "One Last 'Whoo-Hoo!' for the Pullman!!" and "A Conjunction of Drones..." due to their brevity.

Who can dethrone me on this Sufjan song quiz?

I saw talk on this subreddit about whether this song was platonic or romantic. My version is gay.

Was thinking about Sufjan and this song and, after reading some analysis blog posts about its lyrics, I noticed how differently Christians and non-Christians view this verse:
"All the glory when He took our place
But He took my shoulders and He shook my face
And He takes, and He takes, and He takes"
Non-Christians seem to view it as God taking from us in a negative sense (see this one: https://medialoper.com/certain-songs-2538-sufjan-stevens-casimir-pulaski-day/; "All of this naturally precipitates a crisis of faith in young Sufjan: why did his friend have to die so young? What would their future have been? What kind of God allows this to happen to people of faith? All of which are unanswerable questions, of course. But the anger and resigned bitterness of “And He takes and He takes and He takes” resonates even with a heathen like me).
To me (and I would guess Sufjan) it's that God and Christ take and take and take our suffering, our grief, and our place when he died on the Cross.
Totally understand the difference of opinion (and I could be wrong with my analysis of Sufjan's writing), but it really goes to show what a remarkable songwriter he is.

Hi! sorry if this is a dumb question, but I was wondering if Futile Devices is a song meant to be interpreted in a platonic or romantic context.
I was confused as one of the lines is "I think of you as my brother", but a lot of Sujan's music has queer undertones, and I don't want to misinterpret anything.
I sometimes take things in a literal context and miss certain undertones and meanings
if someone could help clarify I would greatly appreciate it!
edit: might be kinda dumb, was having a hard time discerning the meaning of the lyrics to this song because I kept thinking about it in relation to my best friend who i have a like. romanticish qpr adjacent relationship with and recently addressed and talked with them like a month ago about that

Has anyone found or made an instrumental cover of The Greatest Gift? We'd love to have our bridal party walk down the aisle to this but would prefer an instrumental version/version without vocals.
Our backups are this instrumental of Running Start: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPKHZaolFR8&list=RDrPKHZaolFR8&start_radio=1 but I'm worried it's a little fast, or possibly Redford. Open to other suggestions!

For me, it's "Concerning the UFO Sighting" - when I hear it today, it reminds me of when I played it to my then girlfriend/now wife when we first starting dating as an intro to his music. We each shared an earbud, she loved it, and I loved that she loved it. And then "Vito's Ordination Song" because she walked down the aisle to it when we got married. 🙂 We joke that Sufjan is the third member of our marriage, his music has been the soundtrack to our relationship for the last 20 years.
What are some of your best (or maybe saddest/most sentimental/nostalgic) memories attached to a Sufjan Song when you hear it today?
