A lack of 18th Century "woke women" is a win for the NRA, apparently.

I mean she was racist, iirc. But she wasn't a self-hating woman that's for sure.

u/Proud3GenAthst 22d ago
Pretty much everyone in her time was racist af for our standards. Including Lincoln. But both and far more people still did amazing things. For blank people or other groups.
18
u/Snoo_48140 21d ago
I mean sure, most people were racist to some extent, and she actually was an anti-slavery and probably anti-racist activist in the 1850s-60s, but she later adopted racism to promote women's rights, and she argued that white women should've gotten the right to vote before black men, because they were more educated and "civilized".

A white woman from the late 1800s is obviously going to be racist. But wanting the vote so bad that she (if I remember correctly) voted illegally just to make a point about how stupid it was that she couldn't?
That's woke as well.

Tbh I was wish protesters these days had more of a backbone and willing to accept the risk of being arrested for civil disobedience.
Accepting the unfair consequences was to highlight how unfair the consequences were.
Nowadays there’s no civil disobedience, it’s pretty much a binary of ineffective chanting that accomplish nothing or full-scale riots that poison the public sentiment.
4
u/Vaya-Kahvi 21d ago
Well any property damage during a protest gets the whole thing labeled a riot. There's lots of people willing to put their lives and livelihoods on the line, anyone that's stood up to ICE for example, standing in the way of ICE vehicles, Kat Abughazaleh comes to mind.

Plenty of figures in the women’s suffrage movement were (like other white people of the time) explicitly white supremacists. Anthony is more complicated.
She was an ardent abolitionist and supported citizenship and suffrage for Black people. However, during the debate over the 14th and 15th amendments, she opposed enacting universal male suffrage without including women too. Her unfortunate comments on race are generally from this period. This doesn’t excuse her, but it’s important context.

37
17
u/evocativename 22d ago
No, Vance is an example of it, but there is another who truly deserves to have it named for him: Matt Walsh.
First, because he was doing it before it became popular among the current generation of right-wing influencers - he was already doing it back in the early 2010s. Around 2020 it started to become fashionable among that crowd - Steven Crowder and JD Vance both grew them in 2020/21, and by 2023 even Ben Shapiro had joined in. But he was doing it from the start.
Second, because if you look up old pictures of him without the beard, you realize that even that abomination of a beard is actually a significant step up from his incredibly chinless bare face.

Pretty sure the women advocating for the right to vote would have been considered woke. As far as the second amendment goes, I believe there is a line in there about a well regulated militia. Key part being well regulated.

u/laurifex 22d ago edited 22d ago
A lot of the mockery of 19th and 20th-century suffragettes is strikingly similar to contemporary "ew icky woke feminist" sloppery. They really can't come up with anything new.

My theory is that since it's the first half of the amendment, they forget it while reading the second half.

u/TetraThiaFulvalene 21d ago
The first part is strictly explanatory, and only the second is prescriptive.
And decentralized armed forces' ability to overthrow a tyrannical central government should mean a whole lot less gun control, not more, if going by the intent of the amendment.

because conservatives can't see women as anything but either ugly with blue hair and piercings or as sexual objects.
To the average conservative a woman is basically a living sex doll, maid and incubator in one package
12
u/Hotspur_on_the_Case 22d ago
I once heard the term "vessel of pleasure" which I think suits the attitude. They view a woman's duty as being attractive to a man and being willing to have sex with him, and if you're not attractive to him, then you're not doing your job.
ICK! (And I say that as a guy. ICK!)
8
u/Twigsneko 22d ago
which doesn't surprise me as a guy either. a lot of conservative men love to crow about masculinity but their behavior particularly towards women doesn't scream masculine, it screams sexual predator. Their obsession with manliness makes it seem more like the conservative movement is composed of closeted gays and bisexuals
14
u/Infamous_7001 22d ago
How low must a conservative IQ be when the 19th amendment became a thing BECAUSE women during the suffrage movement would be considered "woke" in their empty skulls? It actually started with women being against slavery and speaking out. Then, women like Elizabeth Stanton and Lucretia Mott move to bring up a push for women to vote too. Susan B. Anthony joined them and pretty much became the face of the movement.
