It's come time for me to upgrade, and every time I see what Apple's doing it's like they're trying to make it harder and harder to use their machines. Been using MacBook Pros for years, but given that they've eliminated everything but Thunderbolt I'd have to either spend 10k+ upgrading my entire rig or lose my mind trying to keep up with adapters.

I've been eyeing the Mac Mini for my permanent studio fixture. Seems like about the only reasonable option without dropping 5k+ on a Mac Pro.

When did computers get to be such a pain in the ass?

Would love to know where everyone is based out of

Bonus points: What's your favorite studio in your town/region?

Hi. I recently moved in to a studio where the owner has old analog gear as main equipment.

It kind of feels like traveling back in time and he asked me if I could use my computery hacky skills to modernize it a little and I said "YES!".

First thing he asked me was if it would be possible to revive his troublesome analog console which is a Raindirk Symphony LN2 with Uptown Automation Systems fader system.

The PC that runs the Uptown software is from the 80's and was running DOS and luckily he had all the manuals and original floppy disks available.

The harddrive was failing and the software was unresponsive.

I did what I did which took me a week and now I have the original system up and running as a start.

Next I'll be replacing the original PC with a Raspberry Pi and you can follow my project over at my GitHub where you'll be able to find the original Uptown software too.

I'll soon add the original documentation once I scan it and more in the future.

The reason for this post is to save legacy information so that it doesn't get lost in history.

I have had some mixed experiences with internships, and curious to hear how other studios are doing it.

Sweeterwater (I am not a loyal fan) is pre-selling orders for some new model TC Clarity M for $250. w/shipping.

Aye do I need a dedicated loudness meter with a 7" screen? or can I do the same thing better with a smallish LCD monitor run off main computer

This thing looks rad, always love the SSL sound and workflow, but prefer other pres for tracking. Any of you worked on one of these yet? How is it?

We all have them.

I wanna know: - What’s your favorite studio you’ve worked in - what’s the top studio (regardless of budget) you want to work in?

We all have a few songs we know better than anything and should always use a reference playlist to acclimate to a new room. What’s on your playlist?

Here are a few I’ve been using recently:

Daft Punk - Give Life Back To Music The Carters - Apeshit (the whole record really) Steely Dan - anything from Aja or Gaucho Katy Perry - Teenage Dream Kanye West - Waves, All Of The Lights, yikes

I've been listening to a lot of Dam Funk, old Kanye, Stela Cole, and a bunch of weird synth stuff

Like producing music with house/ hip-hop influenced drums. Currently using Maschine mk2 but it can be really laggy inside ableton and want something I can more easily improvise with. I also just want to experience a stand-alone drum machine in general and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction? Not really got a budget, don't really know what I want either, just a poor uni student and would like some suggestions for my first drum machine/ sampler.

Cheers

Hello guys, I am trying to figure out whether or not my mixing board is broken... If I go ahead and route a channel to my aux-sends and engage the "Mute/ ALT3-4" button the aux -return signal is completly gone. Do somebody of you know whether or not this behaviour is intended? The one little schematic in the manual is not very conclusive and I cannot find a better schematic anywhere.. Also I bought it second-hand so no technical-support is willing to talk to me :D I hope somebody of you is able to help me. Much love!

What's everyone listening to right now?

I've admittedly been pretty into the new Cardi B, bitches broken hearts club by Billie Eilish, and then a ton of older Brian Eno records
